Anything electrical can catch fire.
It seems odd that 120VoltAC-to-12VoltDC coil transformer sealed inside heat-resistant plastic case without source of air can independently burst into flame.
It would seem more likely that power packs have non-replaceable internal heat fuse that burns out, which explains why power packs stop working. Or that overheating and shorted coil would trip the circuit breaker before melting out of plastic case and igniting a fire.
But electricity does strange things.

Power packs come with 5-year limited warranty.
Certainly Malibu and Intermatic would be interested in your story and will want the insurance and fire reports, and would want to examine the power pack to check if quality control matches product being shipped:

I have a ML121RT Low Voltage 121-Watt Power Pack with Timer hooked up with three 20 watt lights attached - going north. I want to add one more 20w llight going south. Can I attach an additional wire to...

Try it... should work
However minimum load for ML121 is 80% load rating.. so 80 watts is ok for 100 watt transformer... 60 watts is low and can cause early failure of transformer.

Caught fire

This really is not worth repairing. You may fix one problem but then another will crop up. Any fire, even a small one, will have damaged the wiring. It,s better and safer to buy another one. Hope this helps. Good luck.

What timer motor fits in Intermatic ML121RT Power Pack ?

The PB912M10 timer clock motor is not sold separately. Aug 2010.
If power pack transformer still works: buy cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override, and plug power pack into cheap timer.
With receipt, power pack might still be under warranty.

Malibu transformer shuts down early

Well, you're overloading the transformer by 30 watts. It's doing what it's supposed to do when overloaded...shut down. It's the _other_ (works fine) transformer that you should worry about possibly starting a fire, since it's not shutting down when overloaded.
