Check to see if the BIOS can see the HDD. If it can, check to see if the hdd is damaged(80GB is an old hdd so it could have been mishandled).

To Enter the BIOS, you can press the F2 key when the computer boots up.

To check the HDD, use the diagnostic tools on UBCD.

UBCD is free and it will require a blank CD. Follow the intructions on the download page if you do not know how to burn an ISO. Also, you may need to press a certain key to boot from CDs or make sure the BIOS boot order is set correctly.

Good luck.

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

I transferred a recovery disc to my usb stick on my ibm computor for my laptop and now it wont load windows just the acer aspire screen comes up????

thats right when a computer starts up it only has a few places to look for a boot record like the hard drive or floppy nic or cd-rom. The reason this wont work for is because there are no usb drivers they load up after the OS is loaded. you need a cdrom sorry

please vote me 10 for this solution

Good day i have tried to install Win XP on my acer aspire laptop after formatting the HDD on another machine but i cant, the acer did not recognise the HDD. what do i do

Do you have an Xp disk? This is the only way I know of to install Windows Xp without encountering any problems.

You will need the disk; also you need to make sure that the boot options see that you want it to boot from your cd drive. When you start your computer up, get to this screen by hitting the key to enter setup options shortly after hitting the power button. It's where you change your BIOS and other stuff.
This is where you can make sure it recognizes your new HDD and change your boot option to #1-boot from cd drive.

Reply to this if you need more info.

Hope this helps.

How to clean reinstall Windows XP and drivers on Acer Aspire SA20 AcerPower

Put XP CD in. Reboot. It'll load drivers and ask you on where to install OS. Delete ALL partitions on had drive, so if let say you have 80GB hard drive, your unpartitioned space ~79GB.

ORGINAL PARTITION DETAILS

When you say 80gb, then the correct disk capacity is 80gb that may be partition if you want (40x2, or 20x4 etc). When the disk(s) are ready, install operating system first and then the setup drivers.

No booting

The problem is Operating systems are co-dependent on hardware.
If the motherboards, processors, ram, video adapters, etc don't match you would not be able to swap hard drives and expect to boot.

You could try pressing F8 on boot and try to access safemode.

If it does boot into safemode immediately it will want to reactivate windows.(because of all the hardware changes.

If it still can't boot, you may want to put the 80 gig in as slave to the 40gig and ghost the 40 gg hard drive over to the 80.

If you don't want to lose your data on the 80 gig then reboot with an xppro cd and reinstall windows in the same partition overlaying the installation on top of existing windows directory.

the new windows will have to be activated but all data will still be there.
