Question about Kenmore 15864/15862 Top Load Washer

Kenmore 90 Series Washing Machine

My washing machine will fill with water but then stops. I can hear the motor when I flip it to wash or rinse but it doesnt agitate. There is no sound when I flip it to spin. I manually drained the washing machine, thinking (belt), and there is no belt. Its a cupling. How do I know if its bad or does anyone have any other solutions? Help? :-)

The coupling does go bad, Often, very often
one of the two spiders is attached to the motor shaft, one is attached to the gearbox input shaft and the rubber ring mates them together, the motor shaft coupling collapses often,
the coupling is ~$16-$25 depending on the parts sales place.
If you can see the coupling, you probably already have the body off,
If not remove the body
from there its easy to replace

undo 2 spring clips that hold the pump on the outer of the motor,
pull pump forward and off the motor shaft and swing aside,
remove screw from head of spring clip between motor and gearbox, remove this spring clip (remember position)
swing motor against coupling to loosen other spring clip, remove spring clip
pull motor forward and away from gearbox
break couplings off shaft of motor and gearbox.

  • NOTE: new coupling sets have a metal center hub to combat this very common failure,
ask the parts supplier if they have one with metal hubs,
if they offer to sell you one identical to the picture, all plastic, old style
Fit new couplings to motor and gearbox shaft using wooden dowel between the teeth, on the hub centers, hit the dowel, not the gear, with a hammer.
fit new rubber ring to gearbox,
install in reverse order
rotate motor to align the teeth

My Kenmore washer fills correctly and then agitates. But it won't stop filling to then switch to the rinse cycle.

Your wash machine doesn't know that the tub is full. Open up your console and look for a vinyl tube attached to your water level switch. Take the tube off of the switch and blow into the tube to clear out any blockages. Then, put the tube back on and test the wash machine. If the problem persists, then you need to replace your water level pressure switch AND the vinyl tube (just in case it has a small hole in it somewhere along the way).

You can buy the switch, which comes with the tube, here:

Good luck!

My kenmore washing machine series 80 model stuck in soak cycle and will not pass to rinse cycle

This is usualy caused by the cold water not entering the machine. If you hear a humming noise it means the fill valve is operating but no water is present. Has some one turned the cold water off? Failing that the fill valve may be faulty and need replacing.

The washer stopped all of the sudden. It was full of water, but even when I unplugged the washer and recycled the machine, it would not fill up. It makes a humming noise when I try to start the machine,...

If it fills and drains then I would suspect the motor coupler is bad, if it's a direct-drive washing machine. Most of them are, kenmore 80 or 90 series.

My kenmore 90 series filled with water and went it got to the rinse cycle it quit working and just started making a grindling sound. help please

sounds like the motor coupler broke. it's a plastic piece near the motor and very easy to replace.

here'e a video you can watch to make it easier:

Washing machine Series 80 Kenmore wont drain water after it's RINSE cylce including the motor. It's like the TIMER stopped after the RINSE CYCLE. I think it's the timer.

does it drain after the wash cycle? if it does, then I don't think it's the timer. It uses the same contact there as for the rinse cycle. Do you hear the motor running as if it's trying to drain? If the motor is running, perhaps the pump itself is no good? Just a couple things to check. Hope it helps.

Kenmore Series 90 top loading washing does not fill with water

Well you eliminated the fill valve when you said it does fill with water. More than likely its a bad connection on the control board. I wouldn't betmy paycheck on it but thats where I'd start. Take the cover off the control board and while machine is on being really careful wiggle each wire until the water starts in the tub and you have found the problem.
