Question about HP Pavilion a767c (82916052406) PC Desktop

1 Answer

My computer won't display an image. It starts up (sometimes) and it logs on, but it won't display an image. I know it's not the monitor because I've also tried to connect to the computer using Teamviewer, and it just shows black. I opened up the side cover of my computer (a HP Pavilion a767c) and saw there is something square, rigged shaped unlatched from two places, just connected from the right side. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Here is a picture of the square thing: https://picasaweb.google.com/aew23456/Mar252011?authkey=Gv1sRgCOHToq7OnYC3Fg#5588123471044553890 .

I'm not sure what it is but it's probably not good that it's sitting on a circuit board. It almost looks like a heat sink or a fan. If you can move it off the board and secure it( it kinda looks like it was attached with screws at one time) out of the way but not in the fan, do that and try to start up. I'm going to look at the picture again but you may have fried waht it's sitting on.

If the board that is sittng on goes out the back of the computer, I'm thinking it's a video card. If i'm correct can you tell me what kind of hook ups it has off of it on the back of your computer and is that what you use to connect monitor?

this is a link(you will have to copy and paste probably), for the secs for your system. I believe my suspicions are true because it came with a ATI Radeon x300se card, which is occupying the PCIe slot.

  • David Petry Mar 25, 2011

It's an "archived" card now meaning AMD isn't really supporting it. There is an archive update for it but you might be better off replacing it with something newer. Let me know how you do at "add a comment" Dave.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure now that it's the graphic card. I'd probably need a new one. Thanks for the help dude.

  • David Petry Mar 25, 2011

It's too bad but you can upgrade to a newer card. Thanks for getting back.

Connecting 2 monitors to laptop without dock

I highly doubt that your machine will allow more than one monitor without both of the monitors being the same image. External monitors on laptops can be used to extend the display, but only by using the laptop screen as one of the two. It is possible to split VGA to duplicate images on two screens, but true dual monitors will require a DMS output or something similar, which I've never seen on a laptop.

After being on a few minutes, the text becomes very blurry I lowered the resolution, which makes the text bigger and helps some. There is an internal adjustment, but I don't know where??

Hi hamptonwhh,

Screen resolution refers to the clarity of the text and images on your screen. At higher resolutions, items appear sharper. They also appear smaller, so more items fit on the screen. At lower resolutions, fewer items fit on the screen, but they are larger and easier to see. At very low resolutions, however, images might have jagged edges. Please follow the steps below on how to adjust your screen resolution.

Windows XP
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.

2. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply.

3. When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black for a moment.

4. Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to your previous setting.

Windows Vista/7
1. Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

2. Under Resolution, move the slider to the resolution you want, and then click Apply.

Notes : When you change the screen resolution, it affects all users who log on to the computer.

When you set your monitor to a screen resolution that it won't support, the screen will go black for a few seconds while the monitor reverts back to the original resolution.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a Acer X203H Monitor. Everything is connected I've checked a million times. When my computer turns on it displays fine on the monitor, but the first or sometimes second time the computer goes to...

I would try this monitor with another PC first to verify that it is not PC problem.
Most common failures in the monitors are due to bad caps in the power supply/inverter board, we want to find out first if it is the monitor or the PC problem.

How to use the function (Fn) keys on the keyboard - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p

Switching the display output location.
Switch between the computer display and an external monitor. If an external monitor is attached, the computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
  • External monitor (CRT display)
  • Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
  • Computer display (LCD)
Notes:
  • For any operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
  • This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
  • This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the following procedure is needed:
  1. When you log on to Windows 2000 and Windows XP for the first time, press Fn + F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Since in Windows 2000 and Windows XP multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs, each user needs to select the function in the initial setup window when logging on for the first time.
  2. If the Fn + F7 key combination have been assigned to a presentation scheme function, start Presentation Director, and change the settings.

Problm with viewsonic va712b

sounds like the operating mode is at a frequency or refresh rate that is outside the viewsonic operating specifications when in normal mode. possible solution: in safe mode access control panel, system, devices (hardware) and look for display. do a right click and uninstall. repeat right click and "scan for hardware changes". That might reset the monitor operating modes but it also gives you a chance to reinstall drivers. If this does not work, try other monitor crt/lcd to see what happens.

IBM T60 can not connect to projector. I have some

Most notebooks have a keystroke that enables the external video port for presentations.

According to the manual for the T60, your Fn +F7 key combination does the following:

"Apply a presentation scheme directly, with no need to start Presentation Director. To disable this function and use the Fn+F7 key combination for switching a display output location, start Presentation Director, and change the settings."

"Switch a display output location
v External monitor (CRT display)
v Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
v Computer display (LCD)"

"Notes:
1. This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
2. This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing."

"To enable this function, do as follows when you log on to Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
Note: Multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs. Each user needs to do the following:
1. Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system.
2. Start Presentation Director, and change the Fn+F7 settings."

Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

Monitor going black after a few seconds can be caused by a faulty power supply or inverter. Some monitors have both as one unit.
Sometimes it is basic failed capacitors, After that then I would look at transistors.
The average monitor from 17 to 20 and sometimes the 22s have usually 4 bulbs in them. One bad bulb will also cause the inverter to not fire up.
Bad bulbs usually show pinkish tint, or flickering or are dark at center top or bottom of the display.
