Yes, if they are not installed, you'll be prompted to install the missing cartridges. Even if you print only in black, colors are also used to help dry the impressions. It's possible with few printers without color cartridge/s being installed, but most printers don't. Let me know if you need further help. I would also like to know the model and make of your printer.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

  3. Make sure that the alignment page has printed on plain, white paper that has no other printing on it. If you need to create a new alignment page, load the tray with letter or A4 unused plain white paper and turn the product off and on again to create the page.
If an alignment page does not print when the product is turned on or off, the issue is resolved. Can I print on my hp 6122 deskjet with only a black ink cartridge? I have no color ink.

Yes, all HP Deskjet printer models feature a 'single cartridge print mode'. Just remove the cartridge you don't wish to print with; the printer will automatically revert into either greyscale printing (if color cartridge remains installed) or black only printing (if the black cartridge remains installed). However, if the installed ink cartridge is electrically damaged/defective the printer will display an alert message; it will need to be replaced with a new cartridge.

You need to take it a couple steps further after your test print. Sounds like your print heads need cleaning or your cartridge may need aligning. If when you attempt to print only with the black cartridge installed but it won't print, then this specific printer requires that color ink also be installed. Typical with most inkjets.

Question about ink cartridges

Hello,

The printer will take a little quantity of color ink though you are printing in black in order to get good quality. Hence it is not possible to print with just black ink cartridge without color cartridge.

Thank you.

Ink cartridge light keeps blinking

you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.
