Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

The problem that I am having with my Emerson PL-P42W-10A plasma tv is that allof a sudden it would not turned on one morning. When you turn it on the tv clicks like it is coming on then you get three blinks of the power on light before it clicks of about 15 seconds later.

Thank you for responding to my post. I have replaced the y sus. and y buffer boards because that was the diagnosis that I recieved from a TV service center in my area. After replacing the parts the tv did the exact same thing. When you turn it on it blinks 5 times then goes out then blinks twice right before it clicks off about 15 seconds later. I am thinking that I need to replace the power supply board and test it with the original y sus. and y buffer boards to see if that works. Then hopefully I can recoup some of the money spent on the two boards i tried already. Earlier I forgot to mention the first five blinks of the power light.

3 blinks indicate that the power source is in protected mode because one of the components of the tv has failed and now acts as a short. The only way to know for sure which is the failed part is to open the tv and measure the voltages on the output lines from the power source - the one that is going to be close to 0 will point to the failed board.
Most likely it's the power board itself - one (or more) filtering capacitor has failed, a common problem in tv's of that age. But it might also be the Y-sus board - Emerson uses old Sony parts and they were notorious in that regard.

5 blinks indicate a completely different problem - the digital/main board is not operational. This can be caused either by the failure of the 5 volts output line from the power source (no voltage - no operating processor - dead tv) of the failure of the processor. In the last case the entire board will have to be replaced. Check the status of the 5v line.

I have a Emerson 42 plasma tv. model # PL-P42W-10A When I plug it on the 2 small rectangular components near the bottom of the power supply click and the standby light on front of the tv blinks 5x.

So, your TV does not come on? That part is not clear to me. I have seen TVs that do just that but is normal. Some machines have internal codes reflected by the infrared LED. When they sense power in the circuits they send internal signals to other components. If your TV does not come on at all then the issue is in one of the internal circuits, could be configuration issue, or that the power supply is at a low level. Please consider that the power supply in some equipment are voltage sensitive.

Video settings don't hold for more than 15min

Check capacitors. There are some very inexpensive meters for this and cheap capacitors are behind many problems in electronics. Once you find it is a bad cap you can replace it or the board.
