Actually on some relay-driven sets i've disabled them by soldering a jumper wire to the relay terminals to close it no matter what, and ironically it brought at least two sets back to life (one a TV/VCR combo that shut down even though nothing was wrong with the VCR). the issue is when an outside source (brown-out/interference/etc) and not an internal problem causes the same result. the protection circuit disables the set to 'protect your investment' (sounds kinda redundant eh?) about 99% of the time the set is fine but is dead because the protection circuit kicked it out. planned obselesence for ya. I lost a great 27" Console (Magnavox 27G1-01 chassis) because a brown-out caused low voltage and the circuit killed the set and it was fail-safe so i couldn't fix it :(

You never want to disable protection circuits. They are designed to detect malfunctions and prevent further damage by shutting down the power. Trying to defeat this may render the unit useless or a fire hazard. Have unit serviced

GREEN BLINKING DOES NT STOP

Shutdown Causes: Cause #1 This model is equipped with a self-diagnosis feature to help with diagnosis of shutdown problems. To activate this turn the unit on let it shutdown then press the input and menu buttons on the front panel simultaneously and hold them in for 5 seconds after 5 seconds the power LED on the front panel will blink a two digit sequence. This will be one set of blinks a short pause then another set of blinks, this will repeat 5 times. 1 - 2 = no error detected 2 - 1 = X-ray protect (high voltage or beam current) 2 - 2 = Short protect (short protect monitors low voltage supplies) 2 - 3 = Deflection protect (this could be loss of vertical or horizontal deflection) 2 - 4 = Vertical protect (usually loss of vertical from the source) 1. Shutdown at power with self diagnosis error 2-2. Check for open fuses F9A04 and F9A05 part # 283P144080 on the +24 and -24 volt lines. If the fuses are open the convergence output circuit would be suspect. 2. Shutdown at power with self diagnosis error 2-1. At power on check for 12-volts DC at connector KH pin 8, if missing check IC9C51 part # 270P990010 and L9C52 part # 441D009020 on the Signal PCB

GREEN LIGHT FLASHING

Good Day;

SHUTDOWN AT POWER WITH SELF DIAGNOSIS ERROR 2 2. CHECK FOR LEAKY C9A60 470 PF 1000 V PART # 154P400030, PARALLEL TO D9A57 ON THE POWER PCB. 2. SHUTDOWN AT POWER WITH SELF DIAGNOSIS ERROR 2 2. CHECK FOR OPEN FUSES F9A04 AND F9A05 PART # 283P043090 ON THE +24 AND -24 VOLT LINES. IF THE FUSES ARE OPEN THE CONVERGENCE OUTPUT CIRCUIT WOULD BE SUSPECT. OR your TV has "COOLANT" (ethylene glycol) on the circuit boards. This fluid comes from the CRT's (picture tube) this fluid is used to keep the CRT's cool, such the name. This fluid from the CRT's leak when TV is on for long periods of time, the chamber expands and the seals leak.

One can remove this fluid by using "acetone" & small brush. The fluid is hard to see, use bright light, they spots can be smaller then a DIME. Also, the fluid can corrode the parts and traces on the boards. To protect the TV in future place heavy plastic or thick cardboard over affective area, make sure TV has proper air flow around TV. Good Luck, big IRISH.

Good Day, xraykid;
The problem with the TV is that it's mad at you for selling it to another family and now it's only sad once the TV came home. What you need to do is to talk to it for several weeks..............

Just joking, but the problem with the TV according to garth is:
SHUTDOWN AT POWER Cause #1 This model is equipped with a self-diagnosis feature to help with diagnosis of shutdown problems. To activate this turn the unit on let it shutdown then press the input and menu buttons on the front panel simultaneously and hold them in for 5 seconds after 5 seconds the power LED on the front panel will blink a two digit sequence. SHUTDOWN AT POWER WITH SELF DIAGNOSIS ERROR 2 2. CHECK FOR LEAKY C9A60 470 PF 1000 V PART # 154P400030, PARALLEL TO D9A57 ON THE POWER PCB (NOT SHOWN IN THE SCHEMATIC). 3. SELF-DIAGNOSIS INDICATES SHORT PROTECT. CHECK FOR A SHORTED IC4B01 PART # 270P261020 (VERTICAL OUTPUT) LOADING 24-VOLT SUPPLY LINE. LOCATED ON THE MAIN PCB. The real problem may be fluid from the crt's, picture tubes, look for fluid on the PCB towards the front of chassis.
Good Luck, big IRISH, e me first, then will help via phone,mmrkcar@yahoo.com, Iwant to help you , that happened to me b4.

TV shutdown for roughly 10 - 15 minutes after being on for hours

Yes the vertical circuit will shutdown the set if theres a problem with the deflection circuit. This model has a history of leaking CRT coolant on the boards near the vertical IC destroying the solder and actually eating through the circuit board. Check the area near the Vertical output IC for signs of coolant leakage or solder cracks.

Your set is going in to protective shutdown something in the start up voltages. This is something you would need a manual for. I have a linkt that has the start up circuit and shutdown diagnosing for your set if you would like me to post a link let me know
