Hi there. You might want to consider having the heat sink assembly pulled apart and the old thermal compound cleaned off and some good fresh compound replace it. That's probably what the issue is. If you are doing it yourself be careful. Otherwise and PC repair place can handle it.

My laptop gets way to hot and turns off.

Keeping the fans clean is especially important, because the fans blow out hot air and bring in fresh air to cool down the laptop.

Fans attract dust, however, which can slow them down, resulting in a hot laptop.

If the laptop overheats, vital parts can cease functioning altogether.

Consequently, keeping your laptop's fans clean is crucial.

check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease

hope this helps

Toshiba satelite works one day ,not the next

Cooling fan, or harddrive.

Only two movable parts, besides the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

I suspect the cooling fan. Why?
Inside your laptop is a Processor. It, like the other hardware components inside, are cooled by air. That little fan is all that pushes air through the laptop.

Here, let me use a Toshiba Satellite C650 series of Notebook PC, as an example,

Scroll the page down, click on the photo next to Step 22.
Here you see the TOP of the cooling fan.

Close the photo. Scroll the page down, and click on the photo next to Step 24.

Fan Assembly removed.

That fan sits in bronze bushings. The bushings look like thick tubes, and the fan's shaft sits in those bushings. (One one top, one on bottom)

After time the bushings wear out. This allows the fan to c-ock over to one side. Plus makes a groaning sound.

Replace the Fan Assembly.

One example,

Now, am I stating that THIS is the problem?
I am stating this is the first place to start.

If the laptop is dirty inside, it is almost a sure bet that this is the problem.

Because if the fan bearings are dry, and worn out, the fan will not operate as it should. It will spin slower than it should, and may have periods where it just stops altogether.

This allows the Processor to overheat. When a Processor overheats it turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.

No Processor operating, no computer.

Want to replace the Fan Assembly yourself? No prob! Doesn't take a rocket scientist. (Sorry Gort)
HOWEVER, there is a PROPER procedure. Post back in a Comment, that you want to replace it yourself, and I will guide you.

{Plus you will be cleaning out the inside of that laptop }

A85S107 Toshiba Laptop: Laptop will run for approx 6 min and gets hot and shuts off. Cooling fan clear and runs properly. Tried cooling pad to no avail.

If you are sure that it's not the fan in question then you'll need to check the heat sink could be too much or too little thermal compound

Hello, I have Toshiba Satellite M200 window Vista, I have a new problem after working for 10-15 mins my laptop is getting hang nothing visible on screen just blurred screen , when i switch off and start...

Your Toshiba could be overheating.
When the CPU overheats then it will shutdown (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down.If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes this problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged withdust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use acan of compressed air to do this.

Hello, The fan that's used to cool the internal system does not turn on anymore, causing my laptop to overheat and shut off spontaneously. How do I fix this? ~ Jordan Williams

Try to clean the fan. This means you need to open your portable system. But before you do this, make your that your computer is not under warranty anymore. If it is not under warranty anymore you have all the means to experiment. Try to remove the fan and clean it. If it does not work, you need to replace it already.

Sir, my sony vgn cs100E laptop fan is not working, i keep my laptop very clean, but now when i start windows the laptop automatically shutdown after 3 min processing. Fan is not working. what should i do?...

Hello Faiz

OK, the thing is, if the fan is not rotating at all, you will need to replace it. The problem related to the computer shutting down, is the fact that the CPU overheats, and then shuts down the computer to protect the system components.

SO, if the fan actually rotates, you will need to clean the fan from all the dust particles collected on it. If the fan does not rotate at all, you will need to replace the broken fan.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards

Toshiba 1415-S173 overheats and cripples the cpu. how to fix this problem?

Assuming there is a fan / heatsink above the CPU, is the fan working? If not, replace the fan. If there's no fan (or if it works), maybe try removing the heatsink and re-setting it with new thermal compound. Apart from that, clean all airways of dust and ensure that when you're using it that the vents are uncovered.

One quick and easy fix you can do is to go get a can of compressed air and blow out the vents and fan area under the notebook. Sometime when there is a lot of dust in them they overheat pretty quickly and shut off. Just like you said happens.
