Your fuse box is located on the handle bars under the black "HONDA" plate. You will break it off if you just grab it and pull. It is held on by two screws that face the fuel tank.If you have a very short phillips insert from a screw driver and a small box end wrench you can some times safely take the screws out with out removing the fuel tank. That technique works on the CX650 hopefully it will work on the VT500. Otherwise you will have to take off the seat and the tank. This will get much easier access to the fuse block cover mounting screws. The guy that designed that pretty piece of plastic did not do any of the owners a favor. Be careful not to break it for you may not be able to get a replacement from Honda.

I have a 1985 honda shadow vt500c, and like many others before me, im in need of a cdi box, or a fix to a broken cdi box, the used ones on line are a bit pricey for my wallet.

Unfortunately, the ONLY thing you can do is replace the cdi box....what REALLY sucks is that those cdi boxes were only used by Honda for 2 years...85 & 86...all the other years/bikes had MUCH cheaper units on them...And DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT waste your time on a USED part that is 30 years old!!! There is NO WAY to test a cdi box!!! Bite the bullet & buy a NEW one if you want to fix it & forget it.....there are new ones available online from a company in the UK for about $259.00 I speak from personal experience with this EXACT issue & once you replace the cdi box, that bike will run (providing everything else is good)

Best of luck!

Just bought my 1st bike, a 1985 Shadow 500. It is missing the fuse box cover. Can anyone help me in the right direction to get a new one? I appreciate any help. Thanks, Tim

The fuse box cover is a dealer only part. If you are not near a dealer you can order the cover on line. You probably wont find a good one used. The design flaw was that it was hard to take the cover off with out removing the tank. I think most people grab and pull on it , thinking it is a snap on cover, and break it at the L bend. It is actually held on by two counter sunk Phillips screws that face the tank. If you look the lower half of the cover may still be attached by the two screws(less parts to buy.) Good Luck

Light will always be on when the bike is running or the key is on with a good battery.
