Question about IOGear GCS634U KVM Switch

1 Answer

I have been using my Iogear kvm switch for almost 2 years now to switch between a desktop and a laptop, both Windows XP. I unplugged the laptop in a hurry to go do a presentation, and plugged everything back in when I got back, but something went wrong. When I switch over from my desktop to the laptop, the keyboard and the mouse are working just fine, but my monitor remains blank. I tried to fiddle with my laptop's display settings, and I can see my desktop monitor then (while switched over to the laptop). It displays my background on the desktop monitor screen, and it allows me to drag windows over from the laptop to the desktop, but I can't get it back to where I can just switch between the two systems as I used to do. I'm not tech-savvy, and called Iogear. They walked me through a few steps, said my switch is working fine, and it's a setting in my laptop, so they did not offer further help. If someone here knows what I can do, I'd be so grateful.

This almost sounds like the display setting on your laptop was changed to an external device. Most laptops are designed to be hooked up to an external display, such as a monitor or projector, specifically for presentations. You can alternate the display options in the following ways:

  1. Laptop display only
  2. External display only
  3. Laptop+External clone
  4. Laptop display + extended desktop on external display (dual monitor setup)
Check your laptop display settings and make sure that it's not in presentation mode (options 2-4) before connecting the KVM switch to it. It may be recognizing the KVM switch as an external display in option 4 mode.

USB Mouse works, keyboard does not

You will need to update the drivers on the computer for the docking station. It will be the windows seven drivers or lack of them that is causing a failure to remap the usb ports that the wireless dongle is plugged into.

Try rebooting sometimes 2 or 3 times. You can also try plugging in a USB mouse while the KVM switch is plugged in. Then go to the device manager and try to detect the new hardware

IOgear KVM not working with laptop

First, you have to make sure that the KVM switch is directly connected to your laptop, and NOT to a docking station.

This KVM switch is designed to work with direct connections to the computers.

Second, the light indicator on the KVM switch is not an indicator for power. It's an indicator to see which port is active. If your laptop is connected to port 2, but the focus of the KVM is in port 1, then the port 1 will have a light, not the port 2.

You may also refer to the user manual of the KVM.

Thank you!

If you are using a docking station with laptop try directly connecting the KVM cable to the laptop. Also try swapping the cables between the two computers to see if you have a problem with a bad KVM cable. If you have a bad KVM IOGear has a three year warranty on their KVMs and you should be able to contact them to get a replacement.

Iogear MiniView Micro USB Plus KVM Switch (GCS632U) Problem

The GCS632U does not have any form of display emulation which may cause video problems if the boot up is not done right. What IOGear recommends is when booting up a computer the KVM should stay on that computer until it comes to a desktop. What this does is it allow the KVM to pass the EDID information from the monitor to computer and that should help.

Laptop will not connect properly

If possible directly connect the KVM cables to the laptop computer. Try to avoid connecting the KVM cables to a docking station. Also if your KVM has manual port selection buttons on the front of the KVM try holding that button for about five seconds when switching ports.

Iogear KVM Switch Not Working at All

jerk_shop is correct, the GCS632U does get the power it needs to function from the USB ports of the computers it is attached to. Make sure the USB portion of the KVM cable is plugged directly into a computer without the use of any USB to PS/2 adapters. You will also want to make sure that at least one computer is turned in order for this KVM to function.

are you using a Mac Mini-DVI to DVI adapter or any adapters? This is a VGA video output type of KVM switch so probably the problem is with the adapters involved to it.

IOGear 2-port KVM Switch (Keyboard Issue)

I have had the same problem off and on since I bought my Iogear 2-port kvm switch over a year ago. I have a DYNEX wired, multimedia, usb keyboard and a Dynex wired usb mouse. The operating system on my desktop is Windows XP, SP3 and on my laptop it's Windows XP professional.

Yesterday, my keyboard "died" on me about 8 times and each time it requires unplugging the keyboard usb cable from the switch and my laptop, rebooting, then plugging the usbs back in. Really, really frustrating and annoying. I'm not a techno guru, but I got to thinking that maybe the keyboard driver might be the culprit. I decided to go to Control Panel, clicked on Keyboard, then Hardware/Properties/Driver/Update Driver. I clicked on "update driver" and let it find one automatically. It took what seemed like a long time for it to find the driver but it found one. The device name changed to KeyMaestro P2360, the driver updated, and I noticed 2 additional files were added to the System 32 directory.

It's only been a day but so far so good. My keyboard hasn't failed yet since the keyboard driver update. I don't know if this is the solution for you or not, but it seems to be the one for me. I'll know for sure if I can through a few days without it failing again.
