Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

My Sony Vaio running Windows 7 64 bit cannot see my WRT54G wireless network, but it sees neighbours networks. My Apple laptop, XP laptop and games console all connect to the wireless network fine. I've deleted and reinstalled the Vaio wireless card drivers and deleted and reinstalled the Vaio networking utility. I've downloaded the latest firmware from Linksys/Cisco and installed that.

Broadcasting my SSID is enabled and it is visible to my other computers and to my neighbours.

I have managed to isolate the problem. It seems to be Windows 7's inability to handle MAC address filtering consistently. Turning MAC address filtering off has enabled the Windows 7 device to see and connect to the wireless network.

I have a sony vaio laptop do i need a wireless card.

Hi,

Almost all laptops being manufactured even 10 years ago has built it wireless card. I believe yours have built in one and no need to buy an external wireless card.

To further verify if you have it installed, you can check in in the Device Manager under Network adapters (if the wireless card driver is installed). To bring this up, follow the steps below.

For Windows XP:
Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc (Type in the box) -> Expand "Network adapters" (You should see wireless and ethernet adapters listed)

For Windows Vista and 7
Start -> devmgmt.msc (Type in the start search box) -> Expand "Network adapters" (You should see wireless and ethernet adapters listed)

If you want to further check if you really have the wireless card installed, please post the make and model of your laptop.

Hope this helps.

Network did not assign a network address to the

Hi there, the only reason it doesn't work it's because the wireless key is not correct. It usually shows limited connectivity when the wireless key is not correct. Even just a letter upper or lower case will cause the problem. Since you are connected with the other computer go under the Router settings and double check the wireless key. Check what kind of encryption the router is using, make sure your wireless adapter can support it.

CompuLayne: Hello bluebells953

Netgear is quite tricky as is with all other routers, but I don't think the router is your problem. Try to do the following.

1) Turn off Vaio laptop
2) unplug router
3) unplug modem
4) plug back in modem - wait for it to boot up
5) plug back in router - wait for it to boot up
6) turn back on the Vaio - log in and see if it sees the SID. If it isn't broadcasting, you might have to enter it in manually and select connect to non broadcasting network

Wireless network connection

you may need to run the network wizard, as your sony may not be set up as using a gateway type connection and may be instructing other pcs to connect via itself and not on the network.
