Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This almost sounds like the door safety optics near the bottom of the door is not working or the optics path is blocked with something. Check the path between the 2 sensors for any obstructions. You may or may not see the red optics light path between sensors as some of these are infra red.

If the path is clear start looking at optics wiring near the sensors and all the way to the opener terminal board for any signs of damage. If all of that appears fine... then your probably going to have to replace the up/down limit switch assy.

Before you get too deep into all of the above... if the door senses a jam as in it has to drive with excessive force it will do exactly as it is now. Bent door rollers... something hanging down from the ceiling blocking door movement in the UP direction.
There really are several things that can cause this:
1. Optical sensors
2. Door limit switch
3. Force adjustment assembly
4. Blockages of optics path or door movement path
5. Stripped worm gear in the opener that has caused the door sequence timing to change on the limit switches.
6. Failed motor drive gear assembly.

Even for professionals some of these can be very time consuming to isolate and repair. (you can tie up as much money in repair labor costs as it would cost to replace the opener. Since you did not indicate how old your unit was or the exact garage door opener model number, the response above is very generic. I am not telling you to replace your opener. Only advising you of what can be high repair costs.

If your not that mechanically inclined I would call a garage door installer and ask that if he can not repair your opener what would be the replacment cost. Negotiate a diagnosis / repair cost vs replacement cost over the PHONE. Explain the symptoms and see what they say. (Call more than one before making a commitment!) Expect to hear all of the answers I mentioned above.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Garage Door Opener Will Open But Not Close

Your machine is jammed, meaning the carriage part or trolley that has the swingarm attached to the door has went further then it,s limit! your trolley that has the chain or belt connected to it may be jammed against the stop bolt that is just before the powerhead of your opener. In order to get it to operate again you must loosen the chain and take some tension off of it , you should also remove the stop bolt at this point sine a loose chain can add an extra inch or two to the travel limit when the door is coming up or going down . Once the bolt is removed your garage door opener should work again , be shure to retighten the chain after removing the stop bolt and check your travel limits in the up and down position! Hope this helps you in getting it to work again! Glenn

My Craftsman garage door will not close, only a few inches at a time

have a problem which returns every year when outdoor temperatures drop close to freezing. garage door will open only a few inches, then stops. I can close it and try opening it again... same result. After five or six such attempts it typically will open. Interestingly, when I push the switch button mounted on the interior wall of my garage and keep it pushed, the door will open, until I release the button at which point it stops opening.

I have an access master door goes up about 6 inches and stops, hit switch again, goes down, hit switch again goes up about two feet, hit switch again goes down, third time switch nothing until...

Door sensors have nothing to do with door opening. Only closing. It sounds like you have a bad gear in the motor unit. Remove the cover and it will be obvious if the gear is bad.

Garage door only raises about two inches then stops.

Check the door springs and also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. The door spring could be broken or the drive gear may be stripped.

The sensors only work when the door is closing.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Garage door won't close.

After replacing the worm gear and main drive gear on my Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener I found that my door moved about 4 inches stopped and reversed the same distance. I checked all the settings and everything seems OK. What fixed the problem was I released the two allen set screws on the end of the motor shaft and pulled tha motor shaft toward me. When I replaced the black plastic cap that looks like a pill cap top on the end of the shaft this corrected the depth setting that cap rotated through the RPM sensor. I set the limit settings (up and down) on the side of the opener and reset the force pots marked (KC) to mid range.
the door now works. I hope this helps. I also checked and eliminated the door sensors by putting a box in the beem this inhibited any movemnet at all, so I knew it wasn't the door sensors as there was at least 4 incheds of movement prior to the box and nothing with the box.

Garage door wont close w/o re-opening

Wrong forum. But hey, I'll take a stab at it.

It sounds like your door goes so far down, then stops. Then you hit the button again and it goes back up and stops at the top. Then again, and now it goes to the bottom.

Have you tried allpying WD-40 to the entire length of the door runners leading from the motor unit to the garage floor? Have yo cleaned these runners, then done the WD-40? Are your door sensors (assuming you have them) set up and aligned correctly? If not and they both have little lights on them, if those lights are blinking it probably means they are not aligned right (though this problem often results in the door not responding at all).

Finally, how old is the opener? Maybe the main unit needs work or dare I say it, replacing. But make sure those other issues are checked before running out and spending money on a new main motor unit.

Hope this helps.

Door hard to close have starts to close stops and starts to open again have to keep stopping and reversing door mult times to get closed

There should be two small white adjustment knobs on the side of the unit that you turn with a small flathead screwdriver. These are the load / limit adjusters.

What it happening is it think there is something stuck under the door (like a car hood, etc)

These adjustments are VERY sensitive, so be patient while adjusting them.
