I have a Panasonic DMR ex 77 recorder which has been in storage for approx 12 months. It worked perfectly before. Now when I start it up a "self check did not complete" error occurs.

    Thanks for the reply .
It is not possible to reset, as no functions work.
If I select OK the machines shuts down.
The disc tray will not open at all.
On start up, it does show an error code U61 momentarily.
    Cheers.

I don't think it's worth sending for repair
    thanks for your help.

Hello
Due to long period of storage, its memory content may have erased or lost. Jut try by resetting the unit to its factory settings. To reset do the following.

Select "Yes" in "Shipping Condition" in the Setup menu. All the settings except for the ratings

level, ratings password and clock settings return to the factory preset. The timer recording
programmes are also cancelled.

Select "Yes" in "Default Settings" in the Setup menu. All the settings other than the tuning

settings, clock settings, time zone settings, disc language settings, ratings level, ratings
password, remote control code, return to the factory presets.

Press and hold [X CH] and [CH W] on the main unit until the Auto-Setup screen appears. All

the settings except for the ratings level, ratings password and clock settings return to the
factory preset. The timer recording programmes are also cancelled.

While the disc tray is open, press [DRIVE SELECT] to select the DVD drive, then press and
hold REC Button and PLAY button on the main unit at the same time for 5 or more seconds.

Press and hold POWER button on the main unit for 10 seconds. (The settings remain.)

    Hello
i thinks that you have checked the last stpe I described here too. To restore the unit if it freezes pare and hold the POWER button on the front of the device not less than 10 seconds.
The reason for Error code U61, as its service manual denotes, [[(When a disc is not inserted) Displays when a malfunction has occurred during recording, playback or
copy. This is displayed when the unit is in the recovery process to return to normal operation; it is not
broken. Once the display disappears you can use the unit again.]]. If either the power switching regulator board inside your DMR is faulty. There are 7 voltages coming out of it, which goes to different stage of circuits, out of which one or more is absent. Although 5VDC is ok, it is enough to work the display and system control to show error codes, an other voltage to its motor and other components will be absent. You ahve to check it and find out which voltages are making the trouble and must retify it. OK.

Its power supply inverter board should have the trouble as I informed you. If you are not aware in electonics, it is best decision to send it for repair. OK.

DVD stuck on Panasonic DMR ES10 in eternal cycle of "self check"/"please wait"

My DMR ES10 was eternally in a "self check"/"please wait" cycle. Couldn't even turn it off normally. By pressing the "Power off" for 10 seconds it will turn off forcefully. Now, after it says "BYE" press the "CH UP" (on the recorder, NOT on the remote))+"STOP" (with the recorder turned off) for another 10 seconds. This will force the opening and we now can take the DVD off. Turn the DVD recorder ON and, if the problem is on the laser, because of dirt, etc it will work and we can now run a DVD cleaner. In this case, the machine was stuck just because the first thing it does is check the DVD inside, and because it can't and just keep trying, it will never do anything else, until we take the DVD off with it turned off.

The problem is in the power supply, usually caused by a open capacitor, in some cases it developes a bulge at the top making it easier to spot.

Ihave dmr-e55 it records advd for 5 minutes and it goes to self check

1) Press and keep [POWER] button on the unit for more than 10 seconds
to turn off the power of the unit.

2) Unplug power cord and wait for approx. 1 minute.

3) Plug power cord in.

4) The display shows [RECOVER] or [SELF CHECK] and it becomes under
recovery. Wait till the message on display disappears.

*When the unit does not recover after taking above procedures (1 to
4), it is needed to be checked and repaired.

I've had a Panasonic DMR-E85H since 2005 and it's always worked great. Several weeks ago when I pushed the button on the romote to start the machine, it went through the normal startup & self-test then...

My E85H went totally out the other day. Had been experiencing the dreaded 'please wait' syndrome for the past month but started working again. I e-mailed Panasonic and they told me to send it to;

McAllen Service Center
4900 George McVay Dr.
Suite B Door #12
McAllen, Tx 78503

Said it would take 2 - 3 weeks, include a note explaining the issue. They do not need the power cord or remote. Also said charges would $50+parts+shipping. I assume labor will be higher after they determine what the problem is.

Have you looked at this thread http://www.fixya.com/support/t216825-dvd_recorder_frozen_please_wait_display. I followed the well written advice/instructions, took mine apart tonight and found 3 bad capacitors which I will be replacing tomorrow. If I have the luck that the others have reported my unit should be up and running tomorrow night for under $10 and a little time. Hope this helps.

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

Recorder keeps 'self checking' then taking dvd back to begining, although only on recordable dvd's, not rented. Are recorders worth repairing or are you better just buying another?

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.
Cheers...

Same problem. "NoREAD" after about 15 months of moderate usage. Cleaned laser eye thoroughly. Solution is a class action lawsuit against Panasonic.
