Question about Singer 1120 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

My friend purchased a Singer 1120 and she is trying to learn to use it. However, the needle keeps breaking. We are only sewing pillowcases out of 100% cotton material (no heavy weight stuff) and she gets it sewing for about 6 inches and then it breaks the needle. It has done this several time. I have had her remove the bobbin -- check it throughly and replace. I have had her replace the needle (with the correct size for the fabric we are using, checked the tension and pressure gauge to make sure it is correct. I asked her to check to make sure it is not hitting the presser foot or the feed plate. I don't know what else to check! Help!

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Try feeding the material slower or if it looks like the stitches are too close together feeding faster. Until you get allot of practice in and are more comfortable with your technique, you can always use a heavier needle!

Set singer 1120 hook and timing

It's actually pretty rare to need to time a machine. Most machines I see that are "out of time" actually have the needle in backwards, or the needle is damaged, or not completely up in the needle clamp, so check those first.

Otherwise, check against the timing diagrams here: http://sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing%20Machine%20Hook%20Timing.htm

Thread keeps breaking

The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle

When I was last sewing, my needle kept seizing up and the machine would stop sewing; I could pull up the needle with the handwheel, sometimes with difficulty, begin sewing again, but it would happen again...

What are you try to sew? If, it is heavy denim or something, sometimes the needle needs to be a heavier grade, like a 16 or 18 if that is not the problem, I think that it is your timing is causing the problem. You probably will need to take it in for service because if I am right, it is not a do it yourself job. You need the tools and expertise to fix it. Try to go to a shop that does Singer warranty work, I don't know if your machine is new but even if it isn't at least they know the machines. You can find them listed at www.singerco.com. If there isn't one near you, try to find a shop you can trust. Good luck

I have a Singer model 1120. I recently ordered an overcast foot, which I have been unable to use because the needle breaks What are the machine settings when using the overcast foot on model 1120?

On page 22 of your manual tells you exactly how to do it. I don't know which model you have A, B, or C, so I am not sure what stitch adjustments you make. But, if you do not have a manual go to www.singerco.com and download your manual for free, then enlarge the diagram and you can see it very clearly. Good luck, and happy sewing.

Can I purchase a manual for a 1120 Singer sewing machine or download it with my computer? When I purchased the machine no manual was included.

Go to www.singerco.com and download one for free. Click on support and instruction manual, put 1120 and voila. Be sure and save it to your computer, flashdrive and or print it out. That way you always have a copy handy. Good luck and happy sewing.

Top thread keep breaking - It looks like I have threaded it correctly but when I use the wheel to pull up the bobbin thread it is wraped around the needle - not nice and neat like it is suposed to be

It sounds like you have a burr on the hook that picks up the thread. You would have to take out the bobbin case and file it off with a very fine sandpaper

Thread bunching underneath

clean the lint out with canned air and check the bobbin holder for any possible needle pieces from breaking a needle maybe the needle is bent and you can't see the slight bend.may need oiling too

I have a singer model 1120 that is in its first use. I threaded the machine correctly, however, the handwheel appears to have too much tension and will not allow me to go down far enough to sew. Is there...

Have you checked your bobbin, mine sometimes gets the needle thread stuck underneath the bobbin and it all gets really tight and won't let the needle go down enough to sew.
