Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My furnace just quit a while ago. The Draft inducer motor blower make alot of noise when it trys to start and then it shuts down. I actually had to turnthe blower with a screw driver first before it would start on its own. I assume that if this blower motor is bad, then it will keep the furnace from starting? Any advice?

So which motor did you turn with a screwdriver, the inducer or blower motor?

  • philpetersen Mar 25, 2011

the inducer motor. That is the one that is making the noise and turns very rough. Furnace shuts down before it ever fires or blower motor kicks in.

Hello, if the inducer motor is bad then the furnace will not continue further and work, it could be that the bearings are shot on the inducer or it has failed electricly. Best thing to do here is replace the inducer motor.

Hello, sounds like the limit switch is opening on the furnace.Usually when a furnace goes off on its high limit is becuase the airflow is being restricted making the furnace overheat. a limit switch is there to protect the furnaace from overheating, most cuases are either dirt or the blower motor not running up to speed, anything that cuts down on the airflow will cause the high limt switch to open.

Certainly wouldn't rule out the blockage as your friend suggests. Perhaps pulling it out, and a flashlight and if necessary a mirror to get a good look in there. May have to head up to top for a look as well. As long as blower sounds like it's running good speed wise.

Gas Furnace will not start when outside temperature rises to 50F

There is a pressure switch near your draft inducer motor that needs to close when draft inducer motor is running. Verify that the switch is closing. If it is not closing, you might have a problem with either the switch itself, or there could be some sort of blockage in your flue. I would start with the switch first. This switch has to "prove" before it will allow anything else to happen. The loud click could be from your switch or your gas valve. If the switch is closing and nothing else is happening, it could be a problem with your gas valve or HSI.

Your doing well just right. When the call for heat is on the draft motor gets a call from the board to come on. When this happens if no voltage is present at the motor then you ahve abad baord. Replace it.
