Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn't start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.

Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

I have a 2006 Yamaha 4 stroke 40 hp outboard. If it sits idle for a month or more it will not run smoothly. I can not seem to correct this problem?

1. NEVER run gas with ethanol in the engine.
2. When you start it put one half can of anti fogging fluid in gas and run it for 10 minutes.
3. When you are going to store it turn the gas supply off while the engine is running and let the engine run out of gas. That way there is no varnish build up in the carb.
4 change the spark plug twice each season.

1982 55 yamaha outboard ,water not coming out the water pump hole in strenght

First thing to check: Disconnect the tiny hose between the check outlet and the engine. Disconnect it at the engine side.
With an airgun, blow in the check hole from outside to engine side.
With an airgun, blow out the engine connection.
Start the engine, check waterflow out of the engine connector. If water, reconnect the hose and check the water at the checkpoint.
If still no water at the engine connection: replace the impeller!

I have a 1993 2 stroke 40 hp mercury outboard motor and it seems that whenever you start it you need to use the choke, even when it's been running for some time and warm. Is that normal for these motors?...

Use it .It is a common thing with 2 strokes.Outboards have water in them and cool down quicker than say a 2 stroke motorbike. They have no water and keep the heat in the engine longer. If it runs well,,don't spend the money. All the choke does is gives the motor a slightly richer air/fuel mix at startup. It cannot hurt the motor.Hope this helps
