The default setting in Windows XP is to have XP scan for updates automatically;You can disable automatic windows update:
[Control Panel] [Performance and Maintenance] [System] select [Automatic Updates]
Next turn off the security alert notifications for automatic update:
Open the Control Panel.Double-click on the Security Center icon security center icon
Click on the option Change the way Security Center alerts me .Uncheck the alert settings box automatic updates and click Ok
