Question about Seagate FreeAgent Go 320 GB USB 20 Hard Drive

1 Answer

My external hard drive was working fine and then it just stopped working. When I try to open it, it freezes any computer I connect it to. Now when I try to open it, it says that the parameter is not correct. It also says something about NTFS formatted partition. I have tried to go to the Disk Management on My Computer but that freezes when I have the device connected so I can't even see the partition. I have Windows Vista. HELP!!

Try Testdisk. see if it picks up the drive and if so get it to check the boot sector and rebuild it if necessary.

SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

SOURCE: my external hard drive says you need to format the disk befor you

Download the BartPE bootable iso and burn it on to a CD:

http://www.download.com/BartPE-Bootable-Live-Windows-CD-DVD/3000-2094_4-10611131.html

It has some nice data recovery softwares. Boot using the CD and run the data recovery software(s) and you should mostly be able to get your data back - save it to your other hard disk.

You can also get some free software data recovery tools from:

Dear All, I have external HDD Maxwell 1T 2.0USB. It was working properly but now it is asking for format. What can be a problem?

Hello krnetadragan
Connect the device to another computer to see if the issue actually comes from it or from your machine .
If your drive is defective , try a recovery tool from http://www.geckoandfly.com/3163/crashed-hard-drive-hard-disk-data-recovery-software-tools-and-service/
You can also open the box ( will be lost ) and connect the drive straight inside your pc if it is a desktop .
If the drive runs fine with the other computer , try changing the usb connection on your pc .
Try also a system restore and set your computer back to a date when your device was running fine . Back up your latest data first .
Best regards .

Try connecting it to a different usb port. plugging out without first stopping the usb device must have the device settings on that port.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.
