Question about Blue Flame Charmglow 30K BTU Propane Vent Free Space Heater

1 Answer

Charmglow 30kBTU NG blue flame heater with the digital thermostat. Has worked fine for a couple of years. Now pilot is fine, but when main flame lights up, it's very unstable. Goes back & forth from big to small and then goes off within 30-40 seconds. Gas pressure to the unit is fine. No dirt, it's been vacuumed a few moths ago. Any suggestions to troubleshoot it?

Pilot wont stay lit an when it does runs for awhile then shut off

Most likely this is cuased by one of two problems. 1) your pilot light is dirty and or obstructed by some bit of dust. 2) the thermocouple is not being hit by the flame properly or is defective.

To tell the differance light your pilot and pay close attention to it until it goes out. If your pilot flame is small, yellowish, or fuming badly it most likely needs cleaned. If your pilot is crisp and blue but goes out with seemingly no warning it may be your thermocouple. It should be one of these two problems which are easy to fix. Now if by some chance everything shuts off while the heater is burning it is a bit trickier. You will have to listen for a pop and try and find the snap disk that is shutting off flow. Remember automatic shutoffs serve a purpose and should never be bi-passed. If you cannot fix it with a good cleaning call a repair man.

I can"t keep my pilot light going.

I am assuming this is a patio heater. I have extensive experience with gas appliances. The most common problem with pilot light issues is the thermocouple it is a probe that is directly over the flame , it senses the flame and allows gas to flow, if it senses no flame the gas valve closes. Patio heaters are also quite finicky, sometimes a simple adjustment of the thermocouple will do the trick. Also thorough cleaning of the orifice is necessary at least 1 x a year.

Pilot light flame is mostly yellow. LP gas

Hi,
Thr thing you need to do is take the pilot assembly all apart and blow the dust and dirt out of it.
After burning for many, many hours the air that is move up through the pilot assembly leaves dust and dirt which plugs off a bit of the air and makes the flame run rich. Meaning that it does not get enough air mixed in for complete combustion.
When you clean it you will see the dirt and dust com out of it.
Reassemble carefully just as you took it apart and it will be back to working great again!!

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

The flame keeps intermittently going out on my gas heater

The air intake hole on the pilot is probably clogged with a small bit of dust or hair. Look to see if your flame is yellowish instead of a nice blue on the pilot. Your pilot should always be blue, also look to see if the pilot is touching the thermal couple. This is a easy fix if your flame has a yellow tip to it and is barily missing the thermal couple. Turn off your heater for 30 minutes to allow it to cool. Next locate the small air intake hole on the pilot it should be roughly a 1/16 diamiter hole. Get a bendy straw and use it to blow through the hole (gently) any pressure over 30 psi will damage the unit. Reassemble and test light your pilot. A low or yellow flame on your pilot cuasing it to miss the thermal couple activates your heaters safety shut off system. These systems are there for a reason, NEVER attempt to adjust your gas controls, If it does not work and cannot be fixed with a good cleaning, call a repair man.
