Question about Carrier 38CKC042 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Hi, I have a 1.5 carrier mini split heat pump. I cant find the model number but believe it was made 2000-2003. This has the remote with the infra red eye mounted in the front of the main unit (like a tv). (There is no other controller as I have seen with other units). The unit is heating and cooling fine, however, it does not seem to be sensing the thermostat. Whether it be in heat or cold, it will turn on and run for about 10 minutes and then shut off and not come again. To get it to run again, I shut off the power coming to the unit and then I hear a little "click" on the main unit. Then I turn back on the power and it will immediately begin cycling and run for another ten minutes. I am thinking that the "click" I am hearing is resetting something but I dont know what is going wrong..thanks

There are a few things that can cause that kind of problem....
The unit could be low on charge and the thermistor on the indoor unit will sense the coil getting too cold and shut it down on a hard lockout....resetting the power resets the lockout...
If the unit is low on charge you will need a tech. that can not only add more freon, but also check for the leak(s) and fix them also....
Now, that thermistor could also be bad and that is causing the lockout...
Also the outdoor fan may not be running and causing the unit to lockout...
Another thing to check is that the indoor air filter... make sure that it is cleaned regularly...low air flow will lockout the unit...

The reason the unit is working for 10 minutes is because the unit has a 10 minute override on these conditions that will keep it from shutting down till the 10 minute time period is up...

Feel free to comment back to me if you have any more questions...

The way I understand it, the 'eye' is just an infra red sensor that detects when someone is in the room. If it doesn't detect anyone, it reduces its power usage until someone walks back in and adjusts accordingly.

Why doesn't remote control communicate with Fischer heat pump mini split system

It sounds like the batteries leaked and oxidized the terminals. If you cannot get them clean enough then I would suggest getting a new reomote from the manafacturer.

My Carrier mid wall split runs for 5 min on heating then it stops and then the green power led flaches 6 times

I'm no expert on mini splits but I do have one and I'm not sure if you're aware of this but the heating mode doesn't function if the temperature drops below a certain point. Look in your manual or do a search on line for your exact model number and you'll find the exact specifications.

Chances are good that both the old remote and the new remote are OK. A TV repair facility or, in some cases, your local Radio Shack dealer may have an infra-red indicator that will show if the remotes are outputiing any infra-red light. This does not confirm that the data riding on the light carrier waves is good data, but in most cases if the remote is putting out light it is also puting out good data.

Since you have two factory original remotes with the same problem and one of them is brand new it is more likely the problem is in the TV itself. Impossible to say without inspection, but the first suspect would be the infra-red receiver. Although you did not spend a lot on the set oroginally it would still be worth the repair if your loacl servicer is a fair one.

Good luck!
