Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console
Welcome to Fixya. We've seen some complaints from PS2 users about their consoles not initially recognizing some DVD, failing to boot, or not loading at random places in the game.
Sony recommends using their Auto Diagnosis tool to resolve this issue; this should help with disk read errors in the older "thick" PS2s and the newer slimline PS2s.
On a dual layer DVD, and if the Auto Diagnosis tool does not resolve your issue then we believe this problem is caused by a misaligned laser which has trouble refocusing to read data on the DVD's second layer. If you're experiencing this issue contact Sony to have the laser replaced. The slimline PS2 has a one year warranty, and if you're within this period they should be able to replace it for free. If you purchased your slimline PS2 more than a year ago (or your old model PS2 more than 90 days ago) you're not covered by their warranty, but they may still be able to repair the issue for a fee.
