Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

1 Answer

My PS2 did not work for most of our games and will not play DVDs. I cleaned the laser as directed and that didn't work. I blew all the dust from the fan and inside the console, that didn't work. Some discs are without scratches and some with, that didn't make a difference. I moved the white cog, both ways click by click, that controls the laser angle and that didn't work. I cleaned all the disks, no luck. The only thing that I wanted to try was to turn the voltage screw, but I didn't have a plastic screw driver. The PS2 works well for 5 disks without problems. When it doesn't work, it will keep spinning at an unnormal rate with slowing and speeding to read the disk and make clicking sounds. Sometimes the TV screen will show the screen as to if you want to pick the memory card or disc. Other games, it will say "Please insert a Play Station or Play Station 2 format disc." when I already have one in. For my "star wars, force unleashed" game, it loads and comes to a screen that asks if you want English or Francals, and I am unable to answer or get off this screen, it's like it freezes. All the games it does play are "Play Station 2" games. And I have Play Station 1 and 2 games that do not work. I have also tried to change the speed and smoothness under the main menu, and that seemed to help one disk to play. I tried to diagnose the problem, but when selected and I placed a disc in, it just keeps spinning both ways with stopping and starting, slowing and speeding, and does not do any think else until I take the disc out. Any other suggestions? I don't really want to spend money for a new one or send it to get it fixed. The model number is: SCPH-39001, the serial number is: U8006272. It is approx. 10 years old.

Welcome to Fixya. We've seen some complaints from PS2 users about their consoles not initially recognizing some DVD, failing to boot, or not loading at random places in the game.

Sony recommends using their Auto Diagnosis tool to resolve this issue; this should help with disk read errors in the older "thick" PS2s and the newer slimline PS2s.

On a dual layer DVD, and if the Auto Diagnosis tool does not resolve your issue then we believe this problem is caused by a misaligned laser which has trouble refocusing to read data on the DVD's second layer. If you're experiencing this issue contact Sony to have the laser replaced. The slimline PS2 has a one year warranty, and if you're within this period they should be able to replace it for free. If you purchased your slimline PS2 more than a year ago (or your old model PS2 more than 90 days ago) you're not covered by their warranty, but they may still be able to repair the issue for a fee.

You can visit either or call +1 (800) 345-SONY for more information.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

My PS2 will play only some DVD movies fine. It does the same with PS2 games. Seems like they have removed something that the older, larger PS2s had that allowed them to read DVDs more deeply and play...

Hi there Mike,

The only possible reason for your problem, since your slimline ps2 is STILL reading them (but just a little slow sometimes), is because the lens could hardly read your discs due to dust build up. Try cleaning it using a disc cleaner and letting it spin for like 30 seconds. If this does not fix the issue, then you may have to MANUALLY clean the lens. Open the cover and once you see the lens, get a clean swab or qtip and damp it in an alcohol and gently wipe the lens in a circular manner. Then let it dry and try to play those discs again.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using FixYa.

My slimline ps2 will not play ps2 games anymore, i went and played a ps1 game (which still work) and no it wont play DVDs or ps2 games

Mine did the same thing. The laser for the PS2 games, and DVD's died. I guarentee that it plays CD's and PS1 games perfectly. if so, the laser needs replaced. and what you have to do is order one on Ebay or something, and have some one put it in. I put a new laser in mine, and well, I am watching a DVD on it right now.

My ps2 wont play games

If it plays audio CDs but no DVD videos or DVD games then you must replace the laser unit cause the part of your laser that read DVDs must be fried.

The guitar hero world tour does not play on my playstatin 2

We had the same problem with Guitar Hero World Tour for PS2. We have an older fat PS2 that would play all of our other games but this one. I tried changing the settings to fast/smooth, changed the diagnostics, still didn't work. Finally, I took The PS2 apart, blew out the dust, cleaned the laser lens with a qtip and rubbing alcohol, dried it gently with a dry q-tip, and the game works!!

sounds like the laser is out of alignment, you can either try to adjust the laser or you can search ebay or other places for a replacement laser assembly for your model.

if you want to tackle the adjustment of the laser assembly then.

but first try this.

It's likely the DVD laser behind the lens is faulty, this would allow it to only play PS1 games. You can try contacting sony as they do both warranty and non warranty repairs. <---- contact info

Hope this helps.

My PS2 Slim plays music, black and blue discs, but doesn't play silver discs nor DVDs.

Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue? You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues. Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
