It is usually on the evaporator. Post a comment with the model number and brand, and I can tell you more. some refrigerators don't have a sensor for the defrost. They would have a clock style timer that tells it when to defrost.

Our Viking professional vcbb363rss freezer is icing up because auto defrost seems to have quit, including the freezer fan. Everyone seems to agree that it's a control board. Do where are they located?

More probable is the the defrost sensor. It is located in the evaporator section in the freezer section of the refrigerator. It will be clamped on the refrigerant return line to the compressor. The sensor closes on temperature decrease below 5 degrees and opens during the normal defrost cycle at least 2 times a day. If the sensor does not close the refrigerator stops defrosting and ice will accumulate as yours seems to be doing. Take your model number to and find the evaporator or controls section and find your sensor. You may need to make a splice to install your new sensor to the electrical wire. some just have push on pull off connections and other have to be spliced. You may have to use a hot air gun like a hair dryer to defrost the evaporator panel to come loose to remove panel. the panels typically have several screws holding them in place and are generally easy to removel. The side normally have gaskets that need to be removed carefully with damage to be reinstalled after sensor replacement.
Hope this helps.

Freezer side not freezing

Check for ice / frosting inside the freezer .... If present you probably have a defrost problem.... This causes the freezer coil to ice up and block the air flow ... the causes could be a bad defrost heater , defrost timer, defrost sensors, or control board. Also make sure that the condenser coil is clean. remove ALL dust with a vacuum and a coil brush .the coil is located either on the bottom or on the back side of the unit... You didn't give the Make and model #

Locate defrost sensor

Remove all of the racks and drawer from the freezer, take the back wall off from the inside of the freezer, defrost limiter/thermostat will be attached to the evaporator near the top, it will be a metal cylinder with two wires coming out of it. It opens on warm and closes on cold
