Question about Iomega 1TB Desktop USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi my iomega 1tb 2.0 usb drive was formatted yesterday to a fat 32 format and now only 429 gb are available. No matter how i try to format, even back to ntfs format i still only have 429 gb available. I have tried to reformat, check hard drive properties etc with no answer for this problem. The hard drive was originally formated with swissknife v3. if u have a solution it would be much appreciated, Regards Ryan gemmell

Sounds like theres a partition hiding somewhere. You dont need any third party software to do what youre doing. Cli start button and in the run box type Disk Management ....in the window which opens you should see all the drives on the computer .... right click on your 1TB and choose delete partition and also any partition which is not allocated now right click again and choose ne partition. Hopefully after all this you have back your 1TB........cheers and please vote

Hi, I have an iomega Prestige 2tb desktop hard drive which i was using on a PC but now want to use it for my macbook pro. How do i reformat the hard drive for Mac? Thankyou

Connect it to your Mac and open Disk Utility. Find the disk in the left pane of the Disk Utility window, click on it, then click the Erase tab in the right pane. Choose your format, then click the Erase button. If the disk does not appear in the left pane or is grayed out, click the Erase or Partition tab first, then select the disk.

Note: the "MS-DOS" format is the FAT-32 filing system. You will have to partition the volume (Partition tab) to use it since FAT-32 cannot cover the entire drive in one partition (I think it is limited to 80 GB). Microsoft won't let Apple use an NTFS volume for Write operations, but FAT-32 can be read and written by both Mac and Windows systems. If you think you may want to use the drive to share files with the PC, make two partitions - one formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a smaller one formatted as FAT-32.

My terabytes have gone i just brought it

Hello,

The reason it "lost" size is due to the limitations of the FAT32 file structure. This system cannot address the entire drive because that is larger than it knows how to organize.

You can either format additional partitions(using a PC) into similar sized FAT32 drives and make the space usable by creating 4-5 drive letter or you can format all of the remaining space as NTFS using windows if you don't need the space for the PS3.

Unfortunately FAT32 simply won't support a single drive letter that large.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Iomega fat 32 formatter program does not allow me

If you really must have fat 32 (maybe for MAC use ?) then windows itself does not support doing a fat format on large drives.

However there is a fix Yup thats why they call it FIXYA

Here is a link to just what you need

Hope its what you need and good luck

I have a 1TB iomega external drive but it only shows as 10GB. I have reformatted but it only allows 10GB. What am I doing wrong?

make sure u r formatting in NTFS format since FAT format does not recognize big drives. u can try to use third party software and still do it in FAT32 as long as it is under TB.

Format from NTFS to FAT 32

You'll want to leave this drive in NTFS format as FAT32 has lots of limitations in cluster size and total drive size.

The issue with your DVD- Media Player has nothing to do with how you formatted an external 1TB HDD.

It's possible that the two occured at the same time for different reasons.

Hi Would you tell me how long 1tb IOMEGA hard drive formating will take?

It depends on how it is connected to the computer. A drive connected through an eSATA port should be able to format 1TB in just 1 - 2 hours depending on how loaded the system is (background processes/services, other use while it is formatting, etc). If it is connected via USB2.0, you are looking at approximately 6.3 times longer or up to 13 hours.

If you could reach and constantly maintain the theoretical maximum throughput on eSATA, it would only take about 45 minutes.
