The backlighting has failed

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2011

If your LCD monitor displays your desktop fine as it boots up and then goes blank after a few seconds, but you can still faintly see your desktop then this may seem like a brightness issue but it's not. The picture displays very faintly, this is because the LCD backlighting isn't working properly. Which in turn is either because (most likely in cases like this) the inverter circuit has failed or the cold cathode tube has blown. If you're new to the electronics business and are not sure how to solder and connect circuits then this is the job for a qualified repair technician. So i suggest you head on down to your local PC store and have a technician take a look.

If you want to try it youself go here to order some spares.

If your monitor is less than a year old then I suggest you take it back to where you bought it and have them send it in for repairs or swop it out with a new one. LCD monitors usually have at least a 1 year warranty sometimes it can even be up to 3 years if you register yours when you purchase it or if it's a really expensive screen.

If the monitor is a good 4-5 years old then it may not be worth fixing or may be too expensive. I suggest you invest in a newer widescreen option. LCD monitors have drastically come down in price over the years and you can easily get a wopping 23" for as little as $180.

You already check the cable and try this monitor with anopther PC already?
You may have problem with the AC adapter or the backlight inverter board problem, or bad backlight assemblies.
You need to verify that the AC adapter is putting out 19vdc under loaded condition.

Hi. I have a viewsonic model VA712. I suspect a failed backlight. What to do?

well if you don't see a lot , your backlight is dead:), easy to repair since you propably get 3 screens which fit when you search for it and every screen is just an oem.... :). except the special expensive once. Take notice if your screen connection is left or right sided and besides get it removed and placed is by unscrew some screw and then comes the uncliccing parts; Use some a sharp screwdriving(with some tape on it to avoid get ugly points).
It's just clickwork, don't be afraid to ruse some strength.
good luck

View sonic monitor VA712 doesn't display picture even after power supply light turns green

It may have blown fuse in the backlight inverter board, that will be the first place to look.
Post pictures if you can.

My VA712 does not turn on, when supply button (mains) not from front panel, switch ON it shows blank screen (no sign of turn on) but when repeatedly switch ON & Off it Turns On & shows the display....

bholesir, If unit covered by ViewSonic warranty, USE IT!!! The units "switch-mode-power-supply" is in need of service!! Unit WILL require inspection and repair of possible bad (poor quality soldering) soldering of electronic components to the prinded circuit cards and or need replacement of bad (poor quality) electrolytic filter capacitors on the unit's "switch-mode-power-supply"/"CCFL inverter circuit" that have failed!! Do a visit to YOUTUBE for "LCD monitor disassembly" and "LCD monitor repair" so you can familarize FYI with what is inside your monitor, and possibly make a decision to do a DIY repair or contract out the work to a local TV/LCD monitor repair shop. If your pocket is deep enough, maybe you will repair and buy a new unit, keeping VA712 as spare unit for a rainy day. Read more of my responses to other owners in my FIXYA profile for more options not mentioned here. Good luck with repair. 12fixlouie
