Should the heater element in a tumble dryer actually glow red?

If your dryer is electric, then yes. The metal coils in the dryers element are energized with electricity with causes them to heat and when metal gets hot, it will glow.

The dryer tumbles but it is not getting hoy-- is there a fuse to replace or is the heat element shot

Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

My hoover tumble dryer Hnc175 wont heat up,is still working as normal, just no heat, i have cleaned out the filters and still not working

Heating elements can fail. These are relatively easy and economical to replace. The heating element is not necessarily the culprit if your tumble dryer does not get hot, however. There are thermal overload cutouts fitted to many machines. If they fail, the current will not be passed to the heating element. Replacement is again, fairly straightforward.
Tumble dryers will often have thermostats fitted. A heater control one, and an exhaust thermostat. The first keeps the temperature correct. The second, as its name suggests, monitors the temperature of the exhaust (in case the airflow in the machine is impeded) Once again, replacement is not too much of a problem.

Please look, at the link above, it will show you how to perform troubleshooting. procedures and repair.
If you feel you don't want to do it yourself, please call a Hoover Tech, and get it looked at. Ask for a "Quote" for the repair, so you get an idea of whats what.

My dryr tumbles but does not dry

Gas dryer? First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it)  It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off.  If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced.  If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

Electric dryer? Temperature sensor has failed or heating element has burned out.
