The lens is damaged and needs to be replaced. Sometimes with use or maybe an accidental hit to the lens can cause a malfunction to the camera resulting in that error. Also if you for example took the camera to the beach, getting something like sand in the camera can jam up the lens and prevent it from fully extending or retracting.

My coolpics s6 has a black screen when in picture taking mode - as if the lens is not open. icons display, and show pictures mode works ok.

Switch on the screen in setup. The screen is now in 'power saving' mode and does not lit up while taking pictures.

My Nikon Coolpix S5 has a broken lens; it son't fully close/ open. The message displayed on the screen says "Lens cover error". Is it something that can be repaired? How much would it cost to fix...

Hi , The lens cover error is because the stepper motor in the camera is unable to open the lens cover. Lens Error!

I know this is really late, but I've been having the same problem with the S6 on and off for the whole year, and I suspected a loose part. For a whole week, I couldn't turn on my camera, and the lens cap doesn't close until five minutes later. So I did what someone should really not do to a camera- I got my lens cloth and pushed on the lens directly as the stuttering noise occured. It works! The camera now turns on and off! Right now, it works okay for a while, but I suspect it might getting weird again, so I will try pushing it in harder next time and see if that will fix it for longer. other than than, make a better choice the next time you buy a camera! =\ I hope this will help others who have the same problem. Please email me at samuelkyl@gmail.com for any other solutions and/or comments.
