Question about Tappan Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

I have a Tappan Model # 56-5472-10/91. I started the microwave and it worked for about 3 seconds and I heard some sizzling and cracking and the turn table stop. When I opened the door I could smell what I thought to be wire insulation that had burned. I tried it one more time and got the sizzling and cracking. I unplugged the microwave.

Hi

The turntable is operated by a motor under the bottom of the cooking cavity. A plastic coupling that slides over the motor shaft, and that's what turns the turntable. In some ovens the coupling is a separate small piece that the glass tray sits on. Other models use a large wheeled plastic ring that rotates the tray.
The usual reason the turntable stops is that the coupling breaks or wears out. The motor shaft is D-shaped, and sometimes the plastic coupling cracks so it doesn't grip properly. Or the plastic wears so that the opening gets rounded and won't grip the shaft. Then even though the motor is running, the coupler doesn't turn. You can usually lift the coupling off the shaft to check it. In some ovens the coupler can only be removed by taking out the turntable motor.

Another probability is that the turntable motor has failed. In most ovens there is an access panel on the bottom that comes off to get at the motor. You can check the motor with an ohmmeter across its terminals to see if it's good. If the motor checks OK ,you can check for power at the motor when the oven is running. This is a little more difficult because it means there will be AC line voltage present, so caution is to the control circuit board.

My question does this model have in the ceiling mould these three small circle indents or are they defects?

The indents are probably there to make the ceiling stiffer, and are not likely defects. Sharp, historically at least, has had a tendency to use thinner metal parts than other manufacturers, but it hasn't seemed to reduce reliability significantly.

If you run the oven with food in it, a sizzling sound could be a sign of a problem, or it could be normal for this oven. Ask the dealer about the noise.

You likely have a door switch or mount. See a handy help file on door switches here.

I heard a boom noise and discovered a crack in the back wall of my Tappan microwave oven. Is it still safe to use?

NO becaus the boom you heard was from a leak in the high voltage insulator of the magnetron or a MOV exploding from an electrical surg from the grid any way IT IS NOT SAFE TO USE the microwave oven... they are are so sheap replace it

Cheers!

Tappan TMV151FS over range microwave starts to work and then dies

Never run the microwave without a load (something to heat)!!! That kills the microwave generating parts.

Sounds like a 'thermal' protect switch is activating after running. Make sure that (if the unit is mounted in a cabinet) that there is sufficient space around the unit for proper air flow and that nothing is blocking the vents. Try setting it on a counter top and heat something. If it works properly and doesn't shut off, the venting space is the problem. You may have to have the cabinet that it sits in redesigned for more clearance.

Tappan microwave

I think the membrane/button for the number 4 is stuck or broken. Due to the nature of a microwave my advice would be to entrust the work to a competant technician. Hope this helps.

It's displaying "lock" and The keypad is not responding.

1. Touch the "CANCEL" pad. 2. Touch and hold the "0" (zero) pad until the word "LOCK" disappears from the display and a single beep is heard. The microwave is locked the same way. You can download a manual similar to your model here: http://tinyurl.com/vpxss

Microwave quit

I would suspect either door switches or an intermittent control circuit board, either of which can be repaired. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure over time. I have a text file on my site called "doorsw.txt" which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems. You can find the file via a Google search. It will help you check and replace the door switches if you or an able friend is so inclined. In some cases, the problem is a bad connection or a bad relay on the control board. That's something we see fairly often, and we repair them for only $32.50 nationwide.
