I would recommend downloading and installing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware(MBAM) and Spybot Search & Destroy. If you're not able to download these using your computer use a computer that can access the Internet. Disable System Restore then run both MBAM and Spybot and see what they find.

If you're using Internet Explorer to browse the internet check the connection settings.
Go to the Control Panel and open Internet Options.
Click the Connections tab
Click LAN Settings
Verify all check boxes are unchecked.
Click OK
Click OK

If you do a System Restore to Factory - your computer will be returned to the state it was in when it first was powered on. Everything that you have added, changed, installed, updated etc. will be gone.

This mean unless you have the original disks (or copies) and cd-keys or serial numbers saved on paper or in emails*, you may have to repurchase them again. The same holds true for any MP3s you purchased and downloaded. Any photos that you do not have backed up elsewhere or printed out, will be lost forever. Basically, if it is not in online storage such as an email account (*and you opted to leave the message on the server instead of deleting them when downloaded), external disk, or printed out - it won't be seen or heard again until you buy it again.

You should look into virus and malware removal if any of these things are important to you. Paying for virus / malware removal will probably be significantly cheaper than having to buy just of or two of the programs you lost.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thank you.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE TO IN STALL A OS

First, backup all your data & music & E-mail & contacts, to a USB memory-stick, or to DVD-writable disks, or over the network, to another computer.

Then, take the first CD-ROM in the set of "System Restore" disks that the manufacturer supplied with your computer.
Insert it into the CD-drive.
Shutdown the computer.
Turn the computer on, and tell the computer to "boot" from the disk in the CD-drive.
It will start to install Windows.
Follow the on-screen prompts.

After the installation has completed, connect to the Internet, and access: http://WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com to get all the latest security-fixes for Windows.
You may have to restart a few times, and re-access this site, to get all the fixes.

Install FREE anti-virus software: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials]
and then reload your files.

Is a long and hard process and you need to be patient.

You can obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft, but only by download. They provide the Setup boot disks so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM.. If you can start your computer from a CD-ROM or from a network-based installation, we strongly recommend that you use those installation methods instead.

You need to make a boot disk for a Windows XP system. .A boot disk can start the operating system on a computer running Windows XP if it will not boot properly and the damage is suspected to be in the files that start Windows.
Problems occur, issues arise, and most times it's unavoidable. Corruption or a boot sector virus can render just about any system dead in the water. So what could happen? In this section we cover some basic issues that can occur so that you just what your up against and why a boot disk can be very handy.

If you are not sure ask help from somebody that can understand this procedures.

Friends laptop will no longer connect to internet. She also did not have any anti-virus software on her laptop, but does now. Like I said, she cannot connect to the internet, yet computer shows the...

You can right click on the "my computer" icon, click properties and click on the hardware tab. Then look for device manager. Look under modems to see if the internal modem is still displayed.
Sounds to me like she got a virus. Many will stop the user from connecting to the internet to download antivirus software. Have you run a scan on the computer since you installed the new anti-viurs? If not, see if you can do so. If you cannot run a scan. she more than likely has a virus and may need to clear the hard drive and use her re-image disks. After backing up her important files and documents to an external drive (flash driver, etc.)

I hope that these suggestions helped and will get your started on getting this laptop connected again.

How do i reboot a computer that has a virus? My computer has a virus and i don;t know how to reboot it . By the way i dont have a boot disk.

First you need a windows xp installation CD ..bootable..
this can be bought with license or made after an image with a burning software ..
After you will have the cd ...the way to do this is ...first boot and press del to go to the Bios settings and reconfigure the boot order to choose the CD/dvd drive as first boot device ...save changes with F10 and restart ..
in this moment if you restart with the boot-able disk inside ...you will be asked to press any key to boot from cd ...and doing this will start the installation process...
I will link here a tutorial with the installation of the Xp operation system ..cause the thing is too long to explain ..but not that complicated...there are also simulations available on the internet ..kinda like a mini-program that takes you fast to familiarize with the process...
if you will not be able to find an image with a installation CD ..just leave me a contact and I will try to find a way to transfer one for you ....

Good Luck !

Hi poemmaker2, mostly hardware and software changes find your Operating System disc to also update your windows installation like what you are having now. So definitely you must have an operating disc so that whenever there are updates of your unit and getting errors like a tremendous virus attack on your computer, it will surely avoid or lessen problems.
