Series 604 2005 yardman riding mower...need to replace deck belt. Do any of the pulleys need to be loosened or taken off to get the belt on. The part # is 954-0349 which replaces 754-0349.(79" belt). The diagram I have shows the long part of the belt going from the pulley on one side to the other side. The idler pully will be touching the belt if I install it this way. Please help!!

SOURCE: How do I put a genuine factory parts deck drive

To start with, the easiest way is to remove the mowing deck from the tractor. It will really be tough if you don't or can't. You may need an owners manual to guide you through all the steps.
1. Remove the cutting deck from the tractor 2. Work the old belt off (if not broken) the mandrel pulleys and idler pulleys 3. Pull the belt away to reinstall a new one 1. Work the new belt around both the mandrel pulleys 2. Make sure the belt is in all the pulley grooves and inside all the belt guides 3. Now you have to reinstall the mowing deck. Here are some diagrams that should help you.

First is to check the belt diagram and make sure your belt is on the correct side of the engagement pulley. This would be the one on the left side of deck with a spring attached.

Changing the Blade Drive Belts:
a.Set the parking brake. Remove ignition key and both spark plug caps.
b.Unscrew the wing nuts from the deck covers and remove both covers.
c.Using a 3/8" socket breaker bar or socket ratchet insert the drive end into the 3/8" square opening in the lower idler arm assembly and push the idler arm counterclockwise. While holding the idler arm back, loosen the blade drive belt from the pulley and slide the belt away from the pulley.

you must go to the supplier manufactue to request service manual for this procedure. However you can do this:
Remove the mower deck:
  1. Make sure that the parking brake is locked.
  2. Place scrap lumber under the front and rear of the deck.
  3. Use the deck lever to lower the deck.
  4. Remove attachments from the deck.
  5. Remove the blade drive belt from the front pulley.
  6. Remove the front and rear deck fasteners, following instructions in your owner's manual.
  7. Use the deck lever to raise the deck.
  8. Remove the scrap lumber.
  9. Remove the deck from under the mower.
Adjust the drive belt:
  1. Remove the belt from the large idler pulley.
  2. Remove the belt from the adjustable idler pulley.
  3. Carefully remove the spring-loaded large idler pulley.
  4. Loosen the adjustable idler pulley and move it slightly toward the rear of the mower to tighten it-or move it toward the front to loosen it-and retighten the pulley.
  5. Replace the belt.
  6. Check belt tension and readjust as needed.

Shifting problems

If this is a manual transmission it is because there is belt drag on the gearbox pulley, it is a crash gearbox so if there is any movement on the gearbox pulley it will not select gears, check the keepers around the gearbox pulley, and that the belt is fully de clutching.

Vibrating 38" deck on MTD yardman mower

Hi, first replace the blade spindle bearings, if you had to hit them to free them up the bearings are shot. Secondly, replace the deck belt. Because you engaged the blades with a siezed bearing the belt will have a worn section where the v will be thinner thus causing the vibration as it passes through the pulleys. Regards Phil.

Needing to know how to replace bottom belt. i have the belt just not sure what i need to loosen or remove to get the new belt on.

the deck belt has a tensioner pulley, usually located in the middle of the deck belt will ride against not around it, all you need to do is loosen the tension on the pulley slip old belt off and slip new one on. I usually use a big screw driver to pry on the pulley, but you can use a ratchet strap. Hope this helps Tim

How do you tighten lower belt on a 42 ich yardman riding mower?

By lower belt i suppose you are reffering to the drive belt or the blade deck belt, either way these belts are usually tensioned by a spring loaded idler pulley. If the belt is still too loose even with the pulley tensioning it, it may be time for a new belt (that one may have streched out a bit).

It's fun to ride around the yard on the mower, watching scrubby grass (and weeds) turn into trimmed lawn. However, when the grass looks as bad after you mow as it did before, or the mower doesn't want to start, riding mowers aren't as much fun. That's when it's time to put on your Fix-It Club hat and have some more fun.

A riding lawn mower is a gas-powered machine for cutting grass. The engine turns a rotating blade that cuts the top off the grass blades to a specified height. The operator sits atop the mower on a tractor-type seat with speed and height controls nearby. Riding mowers also can be used to pull small utility carts for other yard jobs.

To remove the mower deck:
To adjust the drive belt:
  1. Remove the belt from the large idler pulley.
  2. Remove the belt from the adjustable idler pulley.
  3. Carefully remove the spring-loaded large idler pulley.
  4. Loosen the adjustable idler pulley and move it slightly toward the rear of the mower to tighten it[md]or move it toward the front to loosen it—and retighten the pulley.
  5. Replace the belt.
  6. Check belt tension and readjust as needed.
