Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have an AKAI GX-635D Reel to Reel that I bought brand new in 1979 but, because of my last move, it had been boxed and in storage for the past 8 years. I've hooked it back up and mechanically everything still works fine but unfortunately it is only playing out of the right channel with meter response also in the right channel only. This unit is bi-directional with seperate record and playback heads for each direction and the response is the same in both directions (left channel has no response). When set to record the meters respond for both channels perfectly. To me it seems unlikely that there is a problem with both playback heads in the same channel so maybe the problem is in the electronics somewhere. Any thoughts anyone?

The cause can be various, the deck's internal playback amplifier may be failing on your left channel, or you might have dirty contacts on your tape-source switch or your playback head might be very dirty. Try with replacing them with new, also check your circuit board.

How can I remove the pinch wheel from akai gx260d

I am no expert in Akai units but the GX-635D I was working on had a screw off cap and then there was a nut that unscrewed to get the Pinch Roller off. That is all I can say as far as help- the cap should unscrew counter clock wise.

I have a akai gx -635d reel to reel tape player that has stop playing where can i get it fix near me in lafayette, ala 36862

Fuses blow when there's an overload. In your case it will be a transistor perhaps in the power supply that has shorted out. It should be easy to find with an Ohm meter as it will act like you have just touched the two probes together when it's placed on the terminals of a suspect transistor.

Akai gx-625 reel to reel tape deck has no sound

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.
