Have been given a Husqvarna 43s garden mower XTL 45, but without prop[er instructions. Q. What are the settings? is the control lever pushed forward or back, and do both control handle bars have to held together when the cord is pulled?

your linkage came apart from the way it sounds. most all these riding lawn mowers are simple machines. you need to fallow the(flopppy lever) and see where it go's it is supposed to attach to a rod or cable and must have came unhooked

Sounds like the shear bolt is broken, Do you have and owners manual to show you the location of shear bolt? They are easily replaced.

Sounds like a pully might be stuck or one of the deck spindles might be froze-up

If it's like mine the transmission is sealed and cannot be serviced. A local repair shop told me most likely the problem isn't with the transmission but rather the engine pulley is worn. He said if sand or debris gets between the belt and the pulley which has a definite "V" shape to it that it will wear down to a "U" shape. Now mine has a foot clutch on the left side so he had me pull back on the pedal which manually tightens the belt. I did this and it works like a champ. This winter I'll change the pulley.
