All of the sudden, my camera gives error cf. Not an old or over used card. Tried to reformat, cannot. Tried new card, same message.

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2009

I am having the exact same problem, any solution? Thanks.

I am having a similiar problem with my new CF cards. And, I have a question about the response.

"If you get err 99 when trying to format the memory card, the problem is probably in CF (Compact Flash) connector. One common reason is bent pin. You can see it when looking into card slot."

    Here is my question:
If all of the other CF cards that I have previously used with this camera work fine and do not produce any error messages, is it the new refurbished card or the connector?

I purchased 3 Hitachi Microdrives and NONE of the three new ones (refurbished) work in my camera. The old ones that I had, still work. The make and model are exactly the same from the ones that I had and the new ones.

I am going to have to pay to have them reshipped and a possible restocking fee....Please help.

Of course you have tried to format the CF card ? That can solve the problem.

If you get err 99 when trying to format the memory card, the problem is probably in CF (Compact Flash) connector. One common reason is bent pin. You can see it when looking into card slot.

Another possibility could be the CF connector terminations inside the camera. I repaired one EOS 350D where solder joint in one of the pins (23rd) was broken. And that looked like manufacturing failure in the printed circuit board (see the picture). The solder pad for that pin was far too small. There can be also other such cases in the market. The disassembly of the camera is rather difficult but if you have some experience on that kind of work, it is worth trying when you have no other option. Some guidance for disassembly can be found for example here: http://astro.ai-software.com/articles/mod_350D/mod_350D.html

Issue: Memory card Error
Solution: Try a different memory card and/or Reformat memory card PowerShot A70

Formatting a CF Card You should always format a new CF card or one from which you wish to erase all images and other data.
caution_a70.gifPlease note that formatting a CF card erases all data, including protected images and other file types. Please check the contents of the CF card before formatting it.
  1. Turn the power on.

  2. Press the <MENU> button and select [ tools_icon.gif(Set up)] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gif.

    format_menu_1.gif

  3. Select format_icon_a70.gif(Format) using direction_arrow_up.gifor direction_arrow_down.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_2.gif

  4. Select [OK] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_3.gif

    • To cancel formatting instead, select [Cancel] and press the <SET> button.
    • The capacity of the CF card displayed after formatting will be less than the rated capacity of the CF card. This is not a malfunction of the CF card or camera.

  5. Press the <MENU> button.
note_icon_a70.gif
  • If the camera does not work properly, the inserted CF card may be malfunctioning. Reformatting the CF card may solve the problem.
  • When a non-Canon brand CF card is malfunctioning, reformatting it may solve the problem.
  • CF cards formatted in another camera, computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the CF card with this camera.

After inserting cf card into canon s30 i get cf

Believe it or not, the camera's internal clock battery is worn down, causing this problem. Unfortunately, it's buried deep inside your camera, and is difficult to replace. But happily Canon will fix this problem for free. Please see this link.

Canon rebel xt error messages

error 99 can most times be remedied by taking a standard pencil eraser and carefully cleaning the gold contacts at the back of the lens and the gold maching contacts in the lens opening of the camera... BE CAREFUL not to let eraser crumbs into your camera... keep it clean... reset the battery and give it a whirl.... did it solve the 99 issue?
for the CF it refers to the cf card... here's what I've found on this:
Canon reports that this error code may appear on your digital camera’s LCD (liquid-crystal display) when there is an error reading from or writing to the inserted CF (CompactFlash) card. This error code occurs most often after a user has tried to eject a CF card before the camera has finished writing data to the card.Solution:
Canon suggests that you first try to use a different CF card. If you do not see the error message when you use the new CF card, the first card is probably damaged.

Before you take the next step, drag the files from the CF card to a location on your hard drive to back up the files. Next, you can use Windows’ ScanDisk utility to check the CF card for errors. If you use a Mac, you can use Disk Utility (in Applications\Utilities\) in OS X.

If ScanDisk or Disk Utility fails to resolve the CF card problem, insert the CF card in your camera again. Then format the CF card. On most Canon cameras, you can do this by pressing the Menu button, selecting the Format tab, highlighting Format, selecting Format, and choosing Yes. Make sure you have backed up the data on the card before you do this. Formatting the card will delete the images from the card. After you format the card in your camera, use ScanDisk or Disk Utility to check the CF card again. If you still encounter errors while using ScanDisk or Disk Utility, you should discard the CF card because it is damaged.

If the error still occurs after following the steps above, your camera may need repair. Contact Canon’s technical support for further assistance.

hope this solves your issues....
let me know

Eos 40d error 99

Error 99 can mean many things. Have you installed the latest firmware for the camera (version 1.1.1)? If you don't have, download it here (for equipment purchased in USA or Puerto Rico):

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html

If you have the latest firmware, try this:

  1. Switch off the camera and remove the CF card and battery
  2. Keep the camera idle for 30 min
  3. Clean all the contacts of the camera (battery contacts, lens contacts etc) with an eraser. Do this keeping the camera facing down so that no debris fall into the camera.
  4. Attach the lens and insert the battery.
  5. Switch on the camera
  6. Insert the CF card
  7. If the error persists, format the card again
  8. If this does not work, try using another CF card.

Canon rebel xti says cf card replace i have replaced same fault

Check with a magnifier and a flashlight the conditions of the CF memory reader pins. Usually this kind of cameras have the common problem of have bent or broken the CF reader pins. This may caused the original CF error. If you tried to format a CF memory card, then the bent or broken pins may caused the Error 99. By the way, error 99 is applicable to a very open range of problems (lens contacts, faulty shutter, CF memory card access errors, etc). If is under warranty your camera, once you confirm the reason of the problem, send it to Canon for repair. If is out of warranty, you need somebody to repair it, which is not easy for the common person. If need help on repairing it, please contact the ID user Great_items_2004 at ebay. Regards and good luck.

CF AND 99 error.

Hey mus326,
According to the manufacturer a cf error code means there is a problem with your cf card, and error code 99 is a general error code which is often caused by using a lens other than a Canon lens. When formatting the cf card make sure you are formatting the card in the camera, and not using a computer to format the card. If you still can't get the camera to work I would suggest you have it looked at by an authorized service center.

Sincerely,
Allan

Memory card error - E50

Error Code "E50" (CF card formatting error) When a camera error occurs, an error code like "Exx" will be displayed, where the x's represent numbers. The "E50" error code indicates formatting a CF card has failed. Solution To clear the "E50" error, try performing the following procedure. 1. Try using another CF card. If you have another CF card, try loading it in the camera. If the error code is not displayed when the other CF card is loaded, there may be something wrong with the first one rather than with the camera. 2. Use your computer's ScanDisk utility to check the CF card for errors. Use ScanDisk to check the CF card for card error or card failure. Refer to the instruction manual for your operating system or Windows Help for further instructions. (If you are using a Macintosh, use the "Disk First Aid" program to check for card error or card failure. Refer to the instruction manual for your Macintosh OS for further information.) Be sure to back up the data on the CF card on the computer before you check the CF card. If a card error or card failure occurs when you use your computer's ScanDisk, there is something wrong with the CF card. Follow ScanDisk's on-screen instructions to solve the problem. If the same error occurs when you are using the CF card supplied with the camera, please contact the retailer where you purchased the camera or the nearest Canon service center. If the error code is displayed right after you took a picture, the image may not have been recorded. Switch the camera to playback mode to check if it was recorded. Precautions for handling a CF card: - Do not remove a CF card or disconnect the camera's power source while the camera is recording, loading, or erasing data on a CF card. - CF cards are high-precision electronic devices. Do not bend, force, or subject them to shocks or vibration. - Do not attempt to disassemble or alter a CF card. - Place the CF card in the supplied case for storage. - Moving a CF card rapidly between temperature extremes may cause condensation in the card, leading to potential malfunctions. To avoid condensation, place the CF card in a sealed plastic bag before moving it into a different temperature area and allow it to adjust slowly to the new temperature. If condensation forms on the CF card, put it aside until the water droplets have evaporated completely. - Do not use or store CF cards in the locations subject to dust or sand, high humidity, or high temperatures.
