Afraid so. The fact that your brother's earphones do the same thing points directly to the ipod. It may be just a loose connection where the wires go in. Be brave, and undo the screws you can see, so that it pulls apart. Without touching anything else, have a look where your connection goes in. It may be just loose there, and you might be able to tighten it, If not, put it all back together again, and ask a repairman how much to fix it.
