Question about Canon DC21 DVD Camcorder

1 Answer

Hello, I've recorded a video on my Canon DVD camcorder PAL DC21, and I want to import it into my iMovie on a Macbook pro. When I connect the camera using the USB cable provided, a window pops up saying that I've insterted a blank disc, and asks what I would like to open it in. The video IS still on the DVD (I checked to make sure I didn't accidentally erase it), but my computer still won't recognize it. I've gone through a bunch of mac forums and done everything I can on my computer to try to import it, but after all that, I'm thinking it must be a problem with the camera. Thanks for your help

SOURCE: Transfering video to Mac

I believe that camera only works with firewire. You might want to check with Canon to see if there is compatibility problems with Macs. I know it works on Windows computers.

SOURCE: I have a Canon ES200

Hi!

Converting your tape videos to DVDs has 2 steps:
1) Transfering (capturing) the videos to a computer.
2) Converting/creating DVDs out of the video files.

Things you'll need:

  • Camcorder(s) and the tapes.
  • A capturing device or a TV tuner.
  • A/V or S-Video cable(s) - depends on what your camcorders support.
  • A capturing software.
  • A DVD authoring/burning software.
  • Blank DVDs.
STEP 1:
Please follow the simple instructions as shown here ("How to Transfer 8mm Tapes to Computer").
If you don't own a capturing software, you could use the freeware VirtualDub (supports only Windows operating systems!).

STEP 2:
a) Use a DVD authoring software to convert the MPEG file(s) into DVD.
If you don't own a capturing software, you could use the freeware Free DVD Creator... You can find it's tutorial here.
b) Burn the DVDs - using the software above - or any other burning software that can burn DVD files (such as Nero, or the freeware InfraRecorder).

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, rate my solution with the "thumbs" or (even better) add a testimonial.

Good luck and best regards,
Pelu.

Macbook pro doesnt recognize the panosonic pv-gs9 when connected with firewire

I take it that your macbook pro has imovie on it. If you open up imovie and plug in your camcorder it should recognise the camcorder and give you access to putting the movie onto your mac. Have a look at http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/ it should help.

Require a instruction manual for a Canon DC21, in English. Regards Howard

The DC21 was not marketed in the United States, and I cannot locate an English version of the manual on Canon Europa's site (although the manual is available in six other languages there). But the DC21 appears to be quite similar in specification to the DC22 that was marketed in the US. Here is a link to the DC22 manual. Understand that the specifications for the NTSC model may be different than the PAL model, but operating procedures should be very much the same.

I think you are expecting camera to covert VCR analog video-audio signal into digital so it can be record in Macbook?

Camcorder will not do this job and you need to hookup VCR with DVD Recorder to burn DVD of VHS tape.

VHS to Canon MV450i transfer or direct to Mac

The MV450i has an AV input. So get a lead to go from the AV out from the VCR to the AV input at the front RHS of the lens (3 pin stereo jack socket behind grey cover - the lead was supplied with the camera). Go to the buttons behind the screen - press the line in button - camera goes to pause. Se the VCR playing - press the play / focus button to start recording to the tape.. Import to imovie as you normally do.
