Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Model no. E173PB. Was disconnected from PC for cleaning purposes [just dusting - no chemicals or water used]. When reconnected, no image - power button simply flashes [green light] - as if in standby mode - whether it is connected to a PC or not [and whether the PC is on or not]. I'm perfectly happy to pull it apart [so long as I can work out where all those damned hidden plastic clips are]; it's my sister's monitor and she pretty much considers it junk now anyway [which it may well be]. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance............ Erwin

    Thanks for the reply, budmrtn.
I figured that the issue was bad caps.
It will take me a while to get to doing this job; the monitor belonged to my sister and she has decided to get a new monitor.
So now I have a guinea pig, err - monitor, to play with...........
I have never soldered circuitboards [the closest I've gotten is automotive wiring looms]; but I'm always happy to learn new stuff.
So, basically the goal is to open it up [without breaking every damn clip that holds it together], figure out what's wrong; post a few pix; source replacement components [probably capacitors]; unsolder the old - solder in the new and finally see whether it's worth putting back together, or tossing it in the bin [which would probably be due to my bad soldering.....heh].
    Wish me luck..............
    Cheers.

You have to use thin flat blade screw driver to crack it open, starting at the bottom edge and work your way around.

Disassemble video: http://www.lcdrepair.us/E172fpbvideo.html
It may have bad power supply caps or shorted out transistors.

If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

COMPAQ SG3000 The PC is making a very loud whirring sound. I have googled this and it appears that it may be the hard drive or the fan. I have taken the back off the pc and it is full with dust!!!! Also.....

First of all use a vacuum and a soft brush to take away all the dust from the inside. Take care not to remove any connections. After this use a blowgun (if available) to clean the dust from difficult places. The power supply and the CPU blower tend to have more dust that you can imagine. Alternative you can use air under pressure but you have to wait some minutes after the cleaning for the humidity to calm, otherwise you may destroy the pc. Start up the pc and check for results.

To prevent inevitable iphone 7 LCD Screen damage and avoid repair costs, invest in phone cases and screen protectors for your iphone 7. Screen Protectors Made from tempered glass, screen protectors safeguard your phone against scrapes and scratches without compromising touchscreen sensitivity or image quality. Phone Cases There are many stores make durable phone cases and covers to provide extra security for your iphone 7 and protect it from scratches, drops, and dust. A good Clean Because your iphone 7's screen is the interface of the device, it is bound to get smudged and dirty quickly from the time spent using it. When cleaning your screen, never use a chemical cleaning solvent. Instead, use water and a clean, lint-free, scratch-resistant cloth, such as microfiber. Dampen the cloth-not the screen-and gently wipe off with even strokes.

How to Clean Scanner Glass

Steps how to clean scanner glass

1. Unplug the power cord.
2. Clean the outer case with a cloth dampened with a mild detergent and water.
3. If the document table glass gets dirty, clean it with a soft dry cloth. If the glass is stained with grease or some other hard-to-remove material, use a small amount of glass cleaner and a soft cloth to remove it. Wipe off all remaining liquid.
4. Ensure that there is no dust on the glass of the document table. Dust can cause white spots in your scanned images.

*** CAUTION: Do not press on the document table glass too hard.

5. Be careful not to scratch or damage the document table glass, and do not use a hard or abrasive brush to clean it. A damaged glass surface can decrease the scanning quality.
6. Never use alcohol, paint thinner or corrosive solvent to clean the scanner. These chemicals can damage the scanner components as well as the case.
7. Be careful not to spill liquid into the scanner mechanism or electronic components. This could permanently damage the mechanism and circuitry.
8. Do not spray lubricants inside the scanner.
9. Never open the scanner case.

***NOTE: Wipe the inside of the document cover and the scanner's document table before scanning transparencies.

Where does air enter a new style gas fired water heater ? how do you clean the air intake area

Air intakes vary by brand and model.
Product manual has complete information for air intake, and yearly burner cleaning and maintenance.

1) You posted under Richmond heaters which is Rheem
http://www.rheem.com/products/tank_water_heaters/gas_water_heaters/
For a manual, click on your product and next page has documents that download to your computer, including care and use manual.
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=01091171-3bac-4cb9-a0a8-a11aac3bd668
Sample manual shows air intake is a grille located on side of tank.
Intake should be kept clean, and water heater never placed in room with dust, link or chemicals. Even trace chemicals will react with burner and prematurely corrode burner parts.

2) If you have Bradford White water heater, air intake is on side of tank through louvers.

3) If your gas water heater stands on 3-4 legs, then air intake is located on bottom of tank, making it difficult to clean unless tank is sitting on bricks.

Here is photo of air-intake screen on bottom of Whirlpool tank.
Tomorrow this heater is scheduled for installation, and it will be put on bricks.
On this specific model the front cover can be taken off, the burner cleaned, and cover put back on using same gasket, and without buying parts.

I am thinking of purchasing a Reliance water heater and notice that there are many complaints about pilots continually going out. Have these issues been addressed? I currently have a A.O. Smith which has...

I do water heater research for specific purpose.
I see complaints about every brand except the brands that are no longer in business
Most complaints about gas heaters involve burners & pilot.
Here are some things that might help you decide:

New water heaters have to meet regulations
for clean-burning and efficiency.
As a result, water heaters exposed to poor incoming air supply, and poor venting are more likely to be affected by chronic pilot light problems.

Bradford White manual I was reading said, to remove chemicals from same room as water heater. Chemicals corrode water heater parts. This would affect the pilot light as well.
'Spray propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, household bleach, waxes and process chemicals are corrosive at very low levels with no odor."

Yearly maintenance: you're supposed to clean burner and combustion area with a wire bush and vacuum each year.

The FVIR is another consideration today. Flammable Vapor prevention.
Consult the manual before buying the product.
Many gas water heaters have a screen located on bottom of water heater. When the screen clogs with dust, the reduced airflow will stop the burner. Unless the water heater legs are set on bricks, then you can't get under to clean the screen.
If the FVIR trips because it detected a flash-over condition, you have to buy parts for all water heaters except the Bradford White. BW has a re-settable FVIR.

Maintaining your water heater is important.
Look for a brass drain valve instead of plastic.

Anode rod.
If water heater has two anode rods, the tank will last longer.
Inspect anode rod every 3 years.
Loosen anode rod before installing tank so it will come out easily for inspection
Or if it has a powered anode rod, it will supposedly last 'forever' ... until the burner gives out.

Compaq Presario SR1315CL will not power on. Green LED on power supply flashing.

I have the same pc as you and i have suffered the same problem. If all the lights come on and the hdd light flashes and the fan sounds loud, then turn off the system, disconnect all the leads, give it a bit of a clean inside (not necessary but helps) and reconnect the leads and you should have power! This is not permanent mainly for backup purposes

White lines across my scanned images

I had the exact same problem! the problem seems to be with the CCD calibrating itself before it starts to scan.

If you look into the scanner, the scanner glass extends itself into the casing of scanner where the CCD rests. Every time before the scan starts the CCD starts to calibrate itself in its housing before it starts to scan. If there is any reminiscence of dust or anything object (like a piece of paper) stuck in the edges where the CCD rest, the white balancing is thrown off and it causes white lines to appear along the entire line where the dust was present.

Ideally the solution would be to open the scanner casing to clean the housing where the scanner CCD rest. This would solve the problem.

If you are unable to open the scanner casing, then try using a piece of paper or a thin edge of a cloth, slightly dampened to reach into the edge of the scanner glass where the CDD rests and clean it. This is what i did and this solved the problem.

Internet and modem light won't light up

Try disconnecting the power from the cable modem - wait about 10 seconds then reconnect the power. It may take a few minutes to reconnect depending on your provider but sometimes cable modems get "frozen" and need to be power cycled.

If you are using a motorola surfboard modem make sure that you do not press the button on the top of the modem whn you are reconnecting the power cord because it is designed to turn off the internet connection for security purposes.
