Many times this problem is caused by the type of paper being used, especially with photos, try a different paper, or change the type of paper in the print box when you try to print. the amount of toner used is determined by the paper type. if you are printing on glossy paper you might get the smearing if you didn't tell the printer to print on "glossy" Anyway, this is most likely where to problem can be solved. good luck

I have colored smears on left side of all my printed pages with my Brother MFC-9420 CN. What causes this?

It's not unusual for paper to hit the bottom of the print head, especially if the paper is bent. This can cause smearing. If you have pets, you can check for pet fur in the printer, or other foreign material inside that can also cause smearing.

Why are there lines in my photos

The manual says:
This phenomenon is called smearing. This is not a malfunction. Smearing is not recorded on still images, but is recorded as streaks or uneven colors on Sweep Panorama images or movies. ("Bright areas" refers to the sun or electric lights which are much brighter than surroundings.) It does not say a thing about lines in the prints. Are you sure the pictures do have lines too? Can you describe this more accurate?

I've got 2 Kyocera 5030's that are smearing color copies

if the toner can be wiped off of the paper then your issue is the media settings or the fuser is failing. If the image is fixed onto the paper but just "looks" smeared then it could be the drum(s), transfer belt, color registration, or cleaning system.

Xerox 6180 color laser printer - black is smearing on image side of paper. Also have a bit of smearing on the back of papaper. Was a gradual degredation, now it is really bad.

I think it would be to blame the black cartridge has fewer pages to print, probably having lost toner waste tank full and probably dirty image transfer kit worn. replace the black cartridge(if is like i said) and clean image transfer with a clean soft cloth inside the printer and all intake of residual damage including Fuser .

Kids removed a jam, now all prints/copies are ghosted/smear

Sounds like they touched the photosensitive drum. It needs to be cleaned with a cotton cloth. The drum is a lime-color cylinder and it is very fragile. Avoid touching with any object other than the cloth it or scratching it.

Good luck.

Epson Stylus R220 CD Print Smears after printing.

It has to be a bad batch or the wrong system.
Are you sure that the disks are labeled inkjet printable and not lightscribe?
Most printables are white in color and lightscribes are tannish.

Fuser

The fusing unit uses heat and pressure to bond the toner to the paper. Normally poor fusing is evidenced by repeating images or by the print smearing when you rub your fingers across the paper. One fuser roller (the heat roller) is probably aluminum with a teflon coating and the other one (the presure roller) is a type of rubbery material and is often orange.

By your description you mentioned cartridges and that the printer is a full color printer. Is this a laser printer having toner cartridges and imaging units? I just want to make sure you do not have an inkjet printer as they do not use fusers.

The washed out prints you speak of sounds more like a transfer issue such as the transfer belt, transfer charge roller, etc...

Please tell me the brand and model of your printer and I will be more specific.
