Question about Simrad AP24 AUTOPILOT DISPLAY UNIT

1 Answer

Problem: Autopilot does not engage. This is a new problem as it was working quite recently. Model: Simrad NSE8/AP24 with AC42 Autopilot Computer. Attempts to engage the autopilot result in an error message indicating that a Rudder test needs to be done. This test was accessed by Menu-Settings-Autopilot-Installation-Commissioning-Rudder Test and the test was run. Result: Failed Min Drive. The actuator pump was heard to run at ever increasing speeds during the test but the steering wheel did no move, nor did the actuator arm. The test was run numerous times, with the same result. For one test the actuator arm was disconnected from the steering mechanism. The result was the same - no movement of the actuator arm indicating that it was not a high load problem. Voltage measurements across terminals of the autopilot computer during one rudder test indicated that both drive engage terminals were at 12 volts when the actuator pump was running, This is counterintuitive to what I would expect.

Jimtippettau:
Which drive are you using with the AP24, is it just a hydraulic pump on a powerboat, like our RPU80, or is it a hydraulic linear drive (like our HLD-2000) or draglink drive (like our DD-15) on a sailboat?

Simrad ac10 current overload

Normally this is the electric motor causing this problem. Just went on a call and had the same thing. Checked voltage coming from the AC unit to the motor and had 12 vdc then put a new one in it's place and it solved the problem. You don't have to change the pump portion, just change the motor itself. Indeed you will have fluid leaking but many times it's better than plumbing in a new pump.
