Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

Open Question

Montgomery Ward Riding Mower/ Briggs Stratton 12.5 hp engine... makes a humming sound and won't start when I turn the key, sounds like a starter selenoid thing? It won't even begin to try and turn over... battery's fine, spark plug's fine, gas, oil, all fine.

SOURCE: i have montgomery ward riding mower and cant

Line up the deck where it needs to be, and lower the lever....the hanging links should come close to where they go, then use the pins (or whatever) to insert into the hanging levers....Leave the handle lowered, then hook the belt onto the engine pulley, then line it up with the pulley on the deck...you may have removed the belt guides, so put them back on...They help keep the belt from falling off.
Check your work to make sure things look right...You should be done.

Check for blown fuse if good put a light tester on the starting then turn the key if your tester lights up then you know that the stater is bab if it does not then you do not have power to the shotch. One red wire should have power all the time and the other red wire should have power only when the key is on.

make sure thers power going into the starter
if there is then see if the starter is siezed, try turning the fly gear, but not just up against the flywheel but try turning the starter backwards to see if it moves

Lawn Mower wont start

You need to obtain a manual for Briggs & Stratten engines. All the info you need will be in it. The most common cause for non starting in these engines is "Tight Tappets" Wether it's an OHV or the old "L" head engine, because they rev and work so hard, the valves seat themselves deeper into their seat which reduces the valve clearance. There is no adjustment on the older "L" engines, so you have to remove metal from either the valve stem, ot the lifter itself. I have in the past done this in situ with a point file, but it is a tedious job. Otherwise you must remove the head and take out the valves and grind the stems. A tricky task and probably should be done by a mechanic.

PLEASE HELP! My husband is driving me crazy about Riding Mower

Sounds like the gear on top of the starter is stuck or broken. Inspect starter. If it's broken, the starter must be removed to replace the starter drive. You may need to buy a Starter Drive Kit. If you starter has a flat piece on top held on by a retaining ring, it's part # 696541. If you have the older type starter with roll pin holding the drive on, you need part # 696540. You probably have the first one. To install the retaining ring, use a 3/8 socket to tap it into the groove. Dwain

Craftsman 19.5 briggs & stratton mower new battery, new solenoid new brushes on starter. fuse & wiring good shape. when i attemp to start ignition all it does is click.

Check the voltage on the battery to see if it is 12 volts or higher. If not, charge battery.

Then check all starting-related electrical connections-- sounds like there is a dirty connection somewhere if the battery is charged.
