Try scanning without HP imaging software
HP Photosmart C4380 Direct Scan button doesnt function in VISTA
Use the built-in feature of the Windows operating system, called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), instead of the HP software to scan. Follow these steps to perform a WIA scan.

The scanner function is not available when you are connected wireless, you must be connected via USB to your PC for the scanner to function correctly.

Testimonial: "Thanks, that totally worked. I still wish i could scan from the printer, though."
go to following location and try to scan and tell me if it is scanning fine or same issue.
c:\program files\hp\digital imaging\bin in bin folder locate following files. /* in 64bit operating system inspite of program files look into programe files(x86).*/
double click on any of these it will start scanning.

Maybe those were instructions for a PC--I seem to remember a solution center when I used a PC--but I'm not quite sure it tracks on a Mac with Snow Leopard. Here's how you should be able to get it to work on a Mac: - Open System Preferences - Click to open Print and Fax - Click on Options and Supplies - Access the Printer Webpage - After placing your document on the faceplate, hit scan on the computer screen. Then you can preview your document. Since I wasn't sure where I'd find the resultant jpg file, I just did a drag and drop to my desktop and invoked the "save as" option.
