More than likely you are receiving that message because your 1.5gb drive is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32) It can only accept files that are 4gb and smaller. You can partition the drive so that the 100gb left is FAT32 but you could lose everything.

If I were you I would transfer everything off the drive (that I want to save) format it NTFS or Journeled Case Sensitive (if you have a Mac) then copy everything back over including the other 6gb files.

Hope this info helps, if you have more questions or advice just ask.

File size limit for Buffalo HD 250 GB Hard Drive backup

The file is too large meaning that the size of that SINGLE file is too large. Your hard disk is probably formatted to a FAT32 file system, this results in a maximum of 4gb PER FILE maximum transfer. What you could do is archive it into a few parts using winrar and then moving it onto the disk, and when you need the file just extract the archive. Your problem isn't the total free space, it's the size of that file chunk.

How many directory deep is the file going that you are trying to save? I believe the maximum NTFS file (location + name) of file length can not exceed 256 characters total.

Example: C:\user\documents\file.exe is OK

But: C:\user\documents\folder\folder\folder\folder\folder\this folder name 230 charicters long\file.exe BAD

Just because you transferred it to your external hard drive. You will still have the files on your internal HD. You will need to delete the files off your internal HD and they will still be on your External HD. I had to do this with mine and other clients.

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

My MyBook says it has 463BGB free space but doesn't act like it

Hey,

There is a FileSize limit on FAT32 filesystem that doesn't allow files larger than 4GB. make sure the drive is format as NTFS, or if your using a mac, that won't work and you would need to split the file into to parts.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Ekse

File transfer over 4 gb

It's the limitation of the FAT32 file system format of the drive. The only solution is to reformat the drive as NTFS.

Does it see your external hard drive at all? If so I hope you have like a 500 gb and transfer all your pics, vids and other data files over to your external to free up space on you computer hard drive.
