The defrost circuit has failed in your fridge causing ice to build up on the evaporator coils. Since the ice buildup prevents the air from the refrigerator from circulating around the coils, the refrigerator does not cool. This can be repaired easily by a service personnel or by someone with mechanical skills.

The way the defrost system works is that normally the compressor has power for 8-24 hours, then the timer/module cuts power off and sends power to the defrost heater for about 45 minutes. The heater is attached to the coil and warms up the coil to melt the ice. When the coil reaches about 40 deg F, the thermostat which is in series with the heater, opens up cutting off power to the heater. This prevents the freezer from getting too hot. After the 45 minutes are up, the timer/module switches the power back to the compressor again to restart the cooling cycle.

The typical failures are that the heater burns out or if you have an older model, the timer stop advancing and stays in cooling forever. The thing to check first would be the heater. It is mounted on the evap coil located in the freezer. Remove the panel from the back of the freezer compartment. Take a hair dryer and melt the ice off the coil. The heater either looks like a thick wire or it could look like a long light bulb. If you have a meter, unplug the fridge and check the check the continuity of the heater. If it is open then the heater needs to be replaced. Otherwise the problem is with the timer/module.

Parts can be found at your local appliance repair supply house or online at repairclinic.com.

You have a defrost circuitry problem. Bad timer, thermostat or element. If you know how to use an ohmeter, you can figure out which component is bad. you can visually check the defost element by taking the back cover off the freezer and looking at it after u defrost the evaporator

Freezer gets cold but refrigerator does not

blocked air flow from freezer to fridge. Could be ice build up. May have a faulty auto defroster. Freexer is only part that gets cold. The fridge gets it cooling from the freezer.

Why is refrigerator not cooling but freezer works

The freezer shares the cold with the refrigerator .When the coils get iced or the fan does not work, no cold air gets to the refrigerator. Check the fan and see if you can hear it and if not replace it. Check for ice on the coils and if there is ice, replace the defrost timer.

Frige is cold, freezer is cold & freezing . . . Ice maker not making ICE.

Hi: As we don't (as in I) know the actual temp. in the freezer, this is a simple and free try. Cold is cold. The temp in the freezer has to be 0 degrees to make ice. They are thermally protected. A good guess for temp. is your ice cream. Is it rock hard? A lot of refrigerator thermometers are inaccurate. Just try setting your freezer colder. Ignore human nature and don't check the freezer every 30 Min's. You will never get to 0 degrees. I hope this helps, Jeff

I have a Roper RT21LMXKQ00 Freezer wont freeze

The problem is a defrost problem. The freezer coil has frost on it and thus restricts the cold air from flowing. This affects the refrigerator as it gets its cold air from the freezer. The ice will not make if the temperature is above 12*F and this also is why ice cream is like mush.

Freezer cold but not fridge

too much ice bulid up will stop enough cold air being blown into the fridge.Try turning it off letting all ice melt then turn it back on again and set thermostat at a lower temp. There may be ice you can't see.
