Illumination refers to the lights. If something is illuminated it is lit up, or has lights.

What is the fuse number for the dashboard lights on a 2007 Ford Focus 3 door hatchback?

Principles of Operation
The instrument cluster and panel illumination consists of dimmable and non-dimmable illumination components. The dimmable illumination is controlled by the instrument panel dimmer switch, which allows the brightness level of the backlights to be adjusted to the customer preferences. With the parking lamps ON, the instrument panel dimmer switch uses electronic circuitry to provide a variable pulse width modulated (PWM) output to the instrument panel and all applicable switches depending on the driver-controlled level of intensity. The headlamp switch backlighting consists of 2 constantly illuminated LED bulbs that are powered by separate circuits. Battery voltage is supplied to the first bulb when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. Battery voltage is supplied to the second bulb with the parking lamps ON. The non-dimmable illumination allows for full intensity dependant on the ignition switch position.

Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct he cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and GO to Symptom Chart .

do you mean all warning lights or illumination when main lights turned on ? if its the illumination have you a rheostat switch which dims/brightens dash illumination , see your drivers handbook for location

Dash lights do not work

Power is supplied to the instrument illumination by the "TAIL/ILLUM LIGHT" fuse, Fuse #4 (15 Amp) located in the dash fuse block under the left side of the dash. This fuse provides power for both the primary and secondary sides of the TAIL LIGHT relay. The Combination (Headlamp) switch provides a ground path for the primary circuit of the TAIL LIGHT relay. When the primary circuit is completed by the Combination switch, the secondary contacts close and provide power to the tail lamps as well as to all of the instrument illumination bulbs. The ground for the instrument illumination bulbs is a variable-resistance circuit which is controlled by the illumination controller. The final ground for both the combination switch and the illumination controller is Ground G302, located under the center console.

1991 alfa spider. No illumination in instrument cluster but all gauges, waring light etc work. fUSES GOOD

I'd approach solving this as follows:

* pull out the cluster and check all the illumination bulbs. Replace any that are faulty. You may already have done this. Trace the circuit to the cluster connector(s) to locate the +12v and GND.

* apply +12v to the circuit and verify that the bulbs do work.

* next, check the harness that plugs into the cluster. When the illumination is on, do you get +12v on the correct pin?

* The illumination is varied by a resistor or an electronic box, most likely in the circuit after the cluster, and before GND. Pull the illumination control and check
** the circuit between it and the cluster connector.
** the control and GND

* put the cluster back in and check that controller again. You should have +12v coming from the illumination circuit on the cluster. You should be able to safely ground this connection to test the illumination.

If this works, and the control is grounded, then the control is faulty.

Air conditioning and illumination does not work

I would say they used the illumination ckt for grounding the radio and now it probably either needs a headlight / illumination dimmer switch or Body Control Module. I hope this helps.
Thank You,

Night time illumination on switch's and steering wheel.

This is by design. The cruise, lock and window switches do not light up on your Ranger. I thought they might until I checked a wiring diagram. The switches do not have an illumination circuit to them.

Wiring problem with cd player and lights on car

If the unit is turning off when you turn the headlights on, check that you haven't used the illumination wire as ground.

The illumination wire will normally measure as 0V compared to chassis ground. When you turn the headlights on it will go to 12V compared to ground. With the headligts off, if you measure your constant power and switched power (aka 'Accessories') lines against the illumination wire you'll measure 12V and everything will seem alright. However, if you turn the headlights on and then measure again (now that the illumination wire has gone from 0V to 12V) you'll measure 0V, since the voltage difference between the 12V constant/switched power and the 12V illumination wire is zero - they are both now at the same voltage and no current will flow.

Once you find (or install) the correct ground wire and you should be right.
