What computer (make/model) are you using, what OS and what cable between the devices?

Make sure that the port that you are using to connect the computer and the TV is enabled. This may be in the BIOS.

Make sure the input is set to PC (for VGA) or HDMI on the TV. For the HP laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, I can enter the Display settings by right clicking on the desktop (anywhere there are no running programs or icons). Then choose Graphics Properties. In that window, I can choose the external monitor, dual monitors or the laptop's screen. Then click Apply and confirm the new display options (on the appropriate monitor).

For my desktop, with Win7 Pro, I start with the old monitor is plugged in (power and data) and turned on as well as the TV (DVI to HDMI) and start the computer. Then by right clicking on the display, choose Screen Resolution and then select the TV and the resolution for that. (Since the tv and the old CRT monitor have different screen resolutions, I do not use the dual monitor mode.) Since I know both graphics adapters are active, if I unplugged the data cable for the old monitor, it would probably find the TV without this step.

Please note that some TVs with HDMI input do not accept a computer signal on the HDMI port. In that case, you would need to use the VGA port or a converter.

I hope this helps. I'll provide additional help if you give specifics about your TV and computer.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705. I need to connect it to my 20" LCD TV to watch NetFlix. I don't know what I'm doing. I have an A/V cable with S-Video and a 1/8" Stereo Male to Dual RCA...

On my laptop it is f4 key and it controls the windows operating system screen mode so windows has to be running . Also suggest you turn off the p.c and plug in the tv cable to the svideo and then go to the tv and change the input source to the cable input. Then turn on the computer and hopefully it might detect the cable is active and switch to it automatically.
Sarah if you provide us (being all of fixya) with the make of tv and model number as well as the make and model number of the computer we may be able to figure it out in a more detailed analysis of your predicament.

Cannot get the Fn-F5 to work on Acer AspireOne

You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. Here is a list of keycombinations for some of the laptops :-IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7HP and Compaq = Fn + F4Toshiba = Fn + F5Dell = Fn + F8

Transfer picture from laptop to my tv

You need to click the dropdown box and select the 2nd option. It should say "(Default Monitor)" in the beginning of it. Hit "Apply" and then "Ok". After that, the 'Fn+F5' combo should work. It should cycle through A) Laptop and TV, B) Just TV and C) Just Laptop.
Hope that helps.

Fn F5 not working

You have to configure the settings for the external display (TV) in windows.(assuming that's your OS)
Go to control panel >display >properties >advanced and make sure the TV is selected and active as secondary display.

Verify that you get a picture on the TV when doing this, if you do - you're all set.
Restart the computer and the problem should be fixed.

Computer used to work with projector, and now doesn't?

Have you tried pressing Fn F5? On my system (HP), by computer monitor goes dark when I connect the projector. Pressing (Function) FN F5 toggles the video between Computer Monitor, Projector, or Both.
Check the function settings for your computer. On my Compaq laptop at home, the video function is F4, so there may be different settings for your computer.
Good luck!
