On the bottom of your laptop, if there are multiple covers, next to one of them will be a symbol of what looks like 3 circles on top of each other. If the bottom is one big cover, somewhere on it will be the same symbol, indicating the hard drive is under the cover in that location. Hard drives are usually located towards the front inside a laptop. If you aren't very tech savvy, I caution against opening up your laptop. Hard drive swapping is relatively easy, but be sure you know what you're doing first.

Scroll and caps lock light up but laptop will not open

Could be a number of things.
Could be the Hard Drive ( 320 Gb )
Could be stuck key or water damage on Keyboard/ mouse pad.

If you have the savvy to explore, remove the battery, Hard Drive and Memory.
Blow out the cooling fan area and re-install all that you removed.
Sometimes, just reseating things like memory , CPU and Hard Drive
can make the difference.
Hope this helps

Dell Inspiron 1440 notebook cannot start.

I have seen these symptoms before when the hard disk drive has failed. It will hand on the POST screen (The part with the DELL logo) for slightly longer than usual due to fault with the drive, after that it will attempt to boot and error from the hard disk so quickly you see nothing but the laptop appear to cut out. Although the hard disk is the most likely thing to be at fault these issues could potentially be caused by any one of the parts within you laptop being broken.

If you are fairly tech savvy try downloading this utility "Seatools" burn it to a bootable CD. Put the bootable CD in you DELL laptop and boot off it, by pressing F12 and selecting to boot from CD/DVD drive. Then run a "Long test" once this test is complete the software will advise you whether the hard disk is faulty or not.

If you are not confident in trying this I would recommend taking the laptop to be diagnosed by your local computer repair business.

Cannot view files on western digital external hard drive due to the virus named: worm/vb.advw

You can use Symantec AV if you have it. Or you will have to remove it manually - if so, follow the instructions carefully on this link - if you are not tech savvy, you may want to have a tech do it...or better yet - get decent AV ware.

Good luck!

When i turn on my laptop it says operating system not found

Make sure you don't have any USB storage device plugged in, or a CD in the drive and try again. Your PC is likely set to boot from either of those before it's hard drive, and as a result when it sees media there it can read, but no operating system, you get that message. You can change the boot order in your BIOS, but I wouldn't recommend doing so unless you know what you're doin, or have a computer savvy friend help.

Redemption won't back uo

First, I had to fix the serious problem caused by fix INI instructions from a Premium Assistance guru. (Who never responded to emails saying I had a problem he causesd.) Then I hired a tech ($75, minimum charge) to resolve what the guru had caused. The tech also resolved the INI problem, which Techsupportlive, which does Redemption support, had not been able to do in 6 weerks. I'm not savvy enough to know what he did.

I dropped the grandson's external drive.

If the hard drive itself is damaged, recovery of any data on it may only be possible by sending it to a business specializing in such. I'd suggest opening the case of the unit, and you should find that the drive in it is what is in a desktop or laptop computer, with the appropriate electronics to adapt it to USB. There will be at least one cable connection to the drive- make sure it is properly seated. I've seen an instance where the only problem was a partially disconnected cable. Another possibility, is, if it is a standard drive, to let a tech savvy person take the drive itself, and connect it to a standard computer, and see if it is then readable. If so, data can be recovered.
