I have a GE Spcemaker XL microwave oven. It will not heat contents. Everything else works.

There are three parts that will cause this, the magnetron "heats food" and the high voltage capacitor and diode all work together to generate the high voltage along with the magnetron to warm or heat beverages.

Doesn't heat anything

It sounds like the micro generator has died.

Yes, you should buy a new one as the cost of repair is likely to be high.

Microwave has works but doesn't heat

Sounds like the Magnetron has stopped working. The Magnetron is is a specially designed powerful magnet that generates the high frequency microwave energy used to heat food.

Everything on oven appears to work, but does not heat.

from what your describing it sounds as if you have burnt the antenna off of the end of the magtube if this is the case if your microwave is no longer under warranty due to the cost of the part you may be better off to purchase a new microwave.

Whirlpool Microwave no longer heating

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. It is the magnetron that generates the microwaves that heat the food. If it or the circuit that powers it fails then it stops heating. There are some high voltage circuits that feed the magnetron and you can potentially get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Would recommend you have it serviced by a professional if you want it fixed, otherwise look for a new one since the cost of repair can come close to the price of a new microwave oven.

Micro wave not heating

Hello jrsnelus,
The main purpose of a microwave oven is to generate microwaves to heat food in the compartment so if it doesn't do that, then chances are that a component has failed. The fact that everything else seems to work suggests that you at least have ac power getting to the controls. You more than likely have a bad magnetron tube , filament transformer or high voltage capacitor that failed as part of the microwave generating system and it is not something that the untrained person should attempt to fix. Even unplugged, the high voltage capacitor remains charged up sufficiently enough to cause serious injury to someone. I've always been an advocate of the good old saying that if the cost to repair exceeds the cost to replace...then simply replace it. Even if you get an appliance tech to examine it, chances are his fee and the components that he finds defective will more than offset a replacement appliance.. I wish I could have suggested a better alternative for you..
Regards,
Rick

Re: microwave does not heat

Is very unlikely that there could be any other electrical failure since everything else seems to be working.
If you are able to fix it yourself then is way more cheaper just to buy the magnetron.
Click here to find the magnetron.
Before you do any work on this device, please click here to know how to discharge the high voltage capacitor and other safety concerns when working with devices that generate high voltages.
I would say is not worth it to spend more then $100.00 for a 5+ years old microwave.
Good Luck.
