Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My 7 year old Magic Chef model #CTB1925GRW made clicking noises and I noticed the compressor had stopped kicking in, so I made sure all of the wiring contacts were good and plugged it back in. It worked again temporarily (less than 2 hours - not exactly sure), but then totally died. I pulled and checked the relay; it was toast (rattled and dropping 'sand-like' substance). I replaced the relay with a proper new one, but there is still absolutely nothing happening except for the light coming on in the refrigerator compartment. Could the bad relay have fried the compressor, or is it more likely to be the capacitor?

It would not of fried the compressor ...your capacitor is bad...

Yes it would... if the compressor won't start the codenser motor won't work

Magic Chef Refrigerator has stopped cooling adequately.

Check the compressor and the Relay, the relay is located on the compressor itself. you should have full voltage to both of those. If oyu have voltage to the relay and not the compressor then the relay is bad. If you have power to both and the compressor will not kick on then you have a bad compressor and it is best to just replace the fridge

It is making a tic toc noise. It is not refrigerating. The model is : Magic Chef MCBR445W1 Thanks

the noise is from the ptc overload relay located in the lower rear on the compressor, its a safety component that aids in starting the compressor and shuts it down if the compressor overheats, unplug it off the compressor and get an exact replacement and the unit will again cool and stop tick-tocking

That clicking sound is the compressor trying to start, if it is less than a year old just call magic chef and they will replace the unit, if not the cost of a sealed system repair may make it not worth reairing

MIni fridge stopped working/cool.

I got mine in 2005. It stopped working 4 or 5 weeks ago. It made a clicking noise and the compressor was very hot. Compressor is under warranty but appliance repair shop wanted $125 to install it and another $75 to charge it with freon. I saw a posting somewhere else that said it was a relay switch. I ordered one from RepairClinic.com for $24.00 incl. shipping, put it in and it's working now. There's a black plastic housing on the left side of the compressor. Just unscrew that, pop the cover off (that was a little tricky) and plug in the new part. Maybe I'll get another 3 years out of it.

Compressor cutting out about every 30 to 45 sec

The clicking sound is a relay called PTC relay. You need to replace it. First be sure to unplug frig. Remove the cardboard cover that covers most backs of the frig units. Remove the plastic cover that is on the side of compressor. It is held on with a metal clip. Now you should be able to see the relay pry the relay straight off. note the wiring and position of relay. Only three prongs on compressor. Go to a parts house for appliance's and with your make and model number should be able to get a new one. Let me know if you need any more help. ken

MY magic chef CTB1922 IS NOT COOLING

Sounds like your compressor overload tripping. Compressor may be stuck from sitting. Start relay may be stuck from sitting. Try a new start relay after making sure all your wires and connections are good. Sometimes a wrap with a deadblow hammer on the side of the compressor can get it going. Don't pound on it just a light wrap. My guess is the relay or overload first. Unplug before fooling with any wiring!

Re: Magic Chef

If the compressor is running but the fridge is not cooling, the gas may have leaked out of the system or the compressor is inefficient. The only way to know for sure is to connect a set of gauges to the system. You will need to call in a Refrigeration Mechanic.
