My Kenmore 71182100 refrigerator/freezer is not working properly. I just took off the back cardboard and the fan is not running - is this something I can do on my own or do I need a repairman?

Sounds like a defrost failure.
Look on the back wall of the freezer from the inside.
If it is covered in ice your defrost system has failed.
Also check the fan motor in the freezer.
If it is not running it must be replaced.

Clean the coils under the ref or on the back. If there i a fan under the ref make sure it runs when the ref is on. Also since it got moved around if it does have a fan make sure there is a black cardboad panel in place on the lower bottom back of the fridge. If its missing you can cover t with a piece of cardboard cut to fit just leave an opening at the fan. This piece of cardboard directs air from the front of the fridge across the coils and exits by the fan out the back. good luck

The part between the freezer and the fridge is hot to the touch. The freezer is not working by the fridge is.

This is usually because the condenser fan isn't running. It's underneath the unit accessed from the rear behind the cardboard backing. It should run when the compressor runs.

Kenmore side by side refrigerator is cold inside, but bar in the middle separating the frezzer from the fridge is hot to the touch

I had the same problem. I had just brush cleaned my coils and then it began. When I took the back off the fridge, I saw the fan was not spinning. I unplugged the fridge and then tried to spin the fan blades. Ihad inadvertantly bent a blade so it would not spin. I bent the blade back into shape and turned it on. The fan worked and very quickly the middle was no longer hot.

Kenmore 71182100 refrigerator will not cool after clearing drain

Hey Donna! It normally takes 24 hours for your system to go back into it's "normal" mode after it's been off. I would wait until tomorrow and see if it's cooling down properly before you worry. You may call me if you like after you wait the 24 hour period. Hope this helps you! Ella

If you have determined that the evaporator fan in back of the freezer compartment is running, then you might have a stuck or broken air diffuser. The diffuser acts like a damper to divert air into the refrigerator compartment. Sometimes they jam or break due to frost buildup.

Refrigerator problem

3 most common things that cause this are a defrost problem (will notice frost build up on back freezer panel), bad evaporator fan motor (should hear fan running in the freezer), or bad damper (vent to the fridge section). If no frost and fan is running check for air flow out of the vent. It should be at the top of the fridge section.
