Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a hoover windtunnel upright vacuum, It will not shut off and I have to unplug it to do so. If I take apart the upper handle and manually flip the internal switch it works just fine, only when using the external switch on the handle, wont shut off.

This is a common problem with this machine. The switch has too much resistance to be turned on and off with the switch button and rod. If you put in a new switch, ( # 28161075 ), your problem should be fixed.

My new Hoover Wind Tunnel Upright UH50000 will not turn off unless I unplug it.

First I would be sure the handle was properly installed. Remove the two screws holding the upper handle in place and tap it bacwards to remove it. Set the switch inside to the OFF position. Next set both buttons on the handle to the OFF position and re-install the upper handle. If the switch still does not turn the vacuum on and off, the switch will need replacement.

Forward/back cable broke

The cable is user replaceable, but you will need to contact Hoover, or a parts center, to purchase the cable. You will remove the Upper Handle by removing the black screws at the base of the upper handle fit to lower handle (on back).
You will also have to remove the hood to loosen the one screw that holds the cable to the powerdrive gearbox.

Tuned off and won't turn on again

This is a great product. Do not pitch. I've own this same unit for years. Take off the handle. There are four screww located half way down the hanlde. Once the handle is off, you will see the red swtich button. Flip the swtich on/off with handle off and unit plugged. The unit should come on. Put the handle back on and it should operate fine. If it doen't you mjay need a new switch

The shut off switch is stuck to the on position

This sounds like you have an internal problem with the electrical switch. I would recommend you take it to a vacuum dealer who has experience with this model. This is a relatively simple reapir for a pro shop to handle.

How to remove handle from Hoover 5445-900 upright wind tunnel vacuum

Hoover.com doesn't have a manual specific to your model but there is one similar which will show how to remove the upper handle from the body.

http://www.hoover.com/pdfs/manuals/U5467900.pdf

Do you have a replacement switch? If not I believe you can buy one from Hoover (the switch and/or the upper handle assembly). Unfortunately your model isn't listed on the website, is this a new vacuum? I recommend giving them a call, that would be the easiest way.

Also remember when working with electronics to unplug the vacuum. Even when there is no power residual electricity can remain in the wires. If you feel unsure, take it to a repairman.

Hope this helps!
