Replacement parts for a radio this old may be impossible to find. Sometimes it works like that. But there is something else that can be done. First thing is you can make a belt. Older items often have to be retrofitted. Another thing is this radio sells for $100 - $150 often times. A belt or important part can easily run $20+. Even the manual is $20. So often times searching for someone selling the entire item in functioning order and buying the entire unit and having not only the part you need but an entire radio worth of parts is the best way to go. If something else happens you have the part right there. So I found a radio like yours that is the exact same model as yours on e-bay. The cost is $20. It is so cheap because it has some "deep scratches on it." So if you have one that already looks good this is a great buy because the internal parts you need on the for sale radio work fine. This is a buy it now item. If I was in your shoes, this is what I would do. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Technics-Single-Cassette-Tape-Deck-Rs-m240x-/150580472013?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item230f4ba8cd#ht_2048wt_1139

How to replace the capstan belt on a Technics RS-M63 ?

Get the service manual and look at the mechanical drawings of where the belt goes. Most seasoned Technicians just go in and do it. A beginner will have to be more cautious. There are other things in the deck that also need attention like parts oiled and other idlers replaced.
Some Technics decks were ever made to be repaired.

Technics stereo cassette deck rs az6 spares

Tape belts are universal generally. All you do is measure the diameter of the belt in MM and if it is wider than the "string" type the width in MM again. Put the words "cassette drive belt xx MM" into Google. You don't have to precise with the measurements.

RS-X501 DOUBLE CASSETTE DECK PROBLEM WITH TAPE DRIVE ON BOTH DECKS

Usually the fault is the failure of the BELT on the mechanism. You will need to remove the covers to have a look on the motor drive behind the mechanism of the tape drive. Thebelt can be changed if you are technically capable to remove and reset the mechanism.

I need to replace the drivebelts on my deck. Does anybody know where I can find spares in Melbourne Oz? Also if you have part numbers or something.

All you need to do is measure the Drive Belt's diameter. They are universal, not specific to any brand.
Once you have that put the words: "Cassette Drive belts" and the size in mm, into Google and I'm certain you will find someone to post to that part of the world.

Technics RS-TR272 Dual - Won't Reverse

Cassette decks that have been sitting for long periods have problems with drive belts and idlers becoming slack or decomposing of the rubber compound. If you wish to keep the unit, please have it cleaned and have belts/idlers replaced with new ones by a professional service. Also have controls and switches cleaned of built up tarnish and mildew to prevent noisey or drop-out audio
