I had to fix this problem a couple years ago, it's common on Compaq's. The only way to fix it is to short out the CMOS battery on the motherboard. Doing this voids your warranty, so if you wish to follow that course I cannot tell you exactly where to go, but google's your friend. The other option you have is to call Compaq and open a ticket with tech support. If your laptop is still under warranty, you may even get a new computer.

Have you changed the boot order ?
Restart your computer During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or the F2 key Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the using arrow key scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system (note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to your failsafe or optimized defaults) after windows has loaded your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart otherwise it will keep booting from the cd /dvd drive

After installing Ubuntu I logged out. Now is asks for a user name and passwork but I did't set any. I asked for it to automaticaly log on. How dos I fix it?

In Ubuntu 9.04 click on the main icon and select Restart.

- If Ubuntu is the only operating system on your computer you'll need to tap the ESC key as the system boots.

- If you have a
dual boot or multiple-boot system the menu should appear on its own.

- At the root level you'll get a boot menu. Select the one that says "recovery mode" and press Enter.

- Ubuntu continues to load until you reach the Recovery Menu.

- Arrow down to "

netroot

" which states Drop to root shell prompt with networking and press Enter.

- Now, at the root type "

password username

" (where username is the account whose password you want to change) and press Enter.

- You'll be prompted to

enter a new password

.

- You will not see the password or any evidence that you are typing.

- Retype the password. If both passwords match you'll have successfully reset your password.

- Press Enter to continue booting into Ubuntu.

hope it helps

My Compaq Presario 2200 lost its OS I am trying to install Ubuntu but cannot get to the install process

http://www.ubuntu.com/download
Ubuntu 10.10 Latest Version
which can repair what windows has ruined and is unable to fix fix the problem
either burn it to a disk as an iso and install
you might have burn it to an iso first then boot from the cd rom to install ubuntu or you might just try to install ubuntu directly from the download if it does not install you might save it to a folder then burn it as an iso http://download.cnet.com/active-iso-burner/3000-2646_4-10602452.html

You have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive

Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Right, i just installed ubuntu, then overwrite my vista drive, i have a vista disk but i don't know how to overwrite the linux bootloader with vista. last time i tried this if failed.

To re-install Windows Vista please do the following:
Put the disc in and restart the computer
Boot from the disc
Do a full system install
Delete your partition [contains Ubuntu(Linux)]
and install.

I recently did this last week, went from Ubuntu back to windows 7, and currently I duel-boot both Operating Systems. I hope this helps!
Please don't forget to rate :), Thanks!

HD booting in one PC but not in another

Ubuntu works with RAM and CPU Memory instead of a pc like xp that uses Virtual RAM. If the pc that could not load ubuntu doesn't have enough ram to support the reading of the Hard drive and the Operating System then it won't work and Xp will only run on the computer that xp was installed onto the hard drive.

Hi,
I too upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10 using wubi, the Windows ubuntu installer. Everything was fine, and I even admired the beautiful desktop, added KDE. I was very impressed until came the time to reboot. Grub hung. I entered the console and tried to repair: To no avail.
I reinstalled Ubuntu/Gnome without installing KDE. All went fine until the time to reboot. It hung again. After several trials, I decided to go back to Ubuntu 9.04.

From what I could gather on the Internet, it has to do with the new type of file system ext4. If only I had the choice to use it or not.

Since I was using wubi and was not offered the choice to install the ext4 file system, I do not know whether that choice is offered on a full scale installation without wubi. You might try to find out if you can customize the installation process and not select the ext4 file system, if possible.

One remark concerning the amount of swap space you are setting aside. In my opinion that's too much: I have a 2GB RAM, about 300MB swap space, and each time I monitor swap usage I find it very low to nil.

Concerning Ubuntu 9.10, I will wait until the bug(?) is fixed before upgrading. Good luck to you

I hope it helps
Thank you for using FixYa.

You have to delete the ubuntu partition completely and recreate a new partition for the vista install. You can do this during the vista setup.
